jtoma jtoma Lurker Registered: 2002-03-28 Posts: 2	Sorry all, I am in a rush and need this answer ASAP. I am using a simple kix script to writevalue (registry entries). On the first logon to the workstation, the entries are written to the registry (numlock, runlogonscriptsync etc), but do not take effect until the second logon. Has anyone run into this problem before? Thanks in advance!

Shawn Shawn Administrator Registered: 1999-08-13 Posts: 8611	Hi Well, when you really think about it, one would expect that since your changing the runlogonscriptsync setting in the login script itself - that it should take two logins to make it stick. We get around this by making this setting change using Windows NT policies. We set it at the workstation and user level. One is the state of NUMLock prior to logon; the other after logon. For prior to logon, read the following: SUMMARY The status of the NUM LOCK key is specific for each user, and it is disabled by default. If you want the NUM LOCK key enabled for use before a user presses CTRL+ALT+DEL to log on, you must use Registry Editor to change the default behavior. MORE INFORMATION To enable NUM LOCK before a user logs on, use the steps below. 1. Run Registry Editor(Regedt32.exe). 2. Navigate to HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard. 3. Change the value for InitialKeyboardIndicators from 0 to 2. For after logon, read the following: SYMPTOMS The numlock state is not saved if the user is not a member of the administrators group. If the user is a member of the administrators group the numlock state is saved on logoff. The Keyboard entry is found under the Registry path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard InitialKeyboardIndicators: REG_SZ: NUMBER Default: 0 This specifies initial values for keys. 0 means that NUMLOCK is turned off after the user logs on; 2 means NUMLOCK is turned on after user logs on. This value is set during log off or shutdown to preserve the state of the NUMLOCK key at that time. _________________________ Give a man a fish and he will be back for more. But I am surprised about the "having to be an Administrator to save" thingy ... whats up with that ? So based on your sheet (had to read it a couple of times to sink in) sounds like the only way to implement this is with a custom policy template ? -Shawn

I ripped most of the verbage from a TechNet article (the Q# escapes me). I don't have much NT WSs around anymore so can't be sure if it still applies. Back when (I'm talking way back when) we first started rolling out NT4, this was an issue so we just hacked it into the reg. Once it's in .Default, all new profiles would inherit, so the HKCU hack was only for existing profiles. The point I was making (is it not obvious) is that one value (.Default) is read before logon, and the other (HKCU) is read during or after so I doubt you can affect immediate on existing profiles. {edit} Note to self... don't be so freaking lazy!
