Gargoyle Gargoyle MM club member Registered: 2004-03-09 Posts: 1597 Loc: Valley of the Sun (Arizona, US...	know I'm not the only person who's worried since I love to drive, but what do you all think the price of gas will be in 10 years? Will we even be driving cars every day? If fuel prices are so high due to global demand, will we all migrate towards the cities and out of the suburbs leaving the burbs to become abandoned? Will interstate and international leisure travel come to a standstill? Will we have no choice but to buy locally produced food? I am really interested in what our global community has to say, as many of you know I am in US and of course this is a hot topic around here. _________________________ Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.

However, I recognise that oil is a very much undervalued resource. Nearly all the products that we use these days are derived from oil, including plastics, pharmaceuticals, detergents, paints... you name it. Yet what do we with this limited resouce? We burn over 90% of it!! I truly hope that rising fuel prices encourages more renewable resources to get a foot hold, so we can spare oil as a source of more important things. There are many good alternatives that are starting to get noticed such as celluosic ethanol (as opposed to the rediculous idea of making ethanol from corn and other food sources) and diesel from algae. What really amazes me is just how rediculously cheap petrol is in the US compared to many other countries. Considering how much oil the US consumes and how cheap it is there, it appears to me that the US devalues oil more than any other country.

Maybe a helpful addition but we need something to replace oil for vehicles use. The World consumes way too much oil and would any other type of bio fuel as well if it was the only source. We need to find some type of source that does not deplete or pollute other resources - so far there is nothing, but the search continues. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellulosic_ethanol .

So, either way, you get screwed. Pretty much the only way to improve is to be more restrictive in resource usage and increase recycling of resources where reasonable. _________________________ There are two types of vessels, submarines and targets.

NTDOC NTDOC Administrator Registered: 2000-07-28 Posts: 11624 Loc: CA	Yes they're good, but again they also take electrical power that has to be generated which typically also has byproduct usage of oil. Also many Nations around the World are already at maximum capacity for Electric power generation and have brown outs or black outs, thus requiring more power generation plants. Like a darn catch-22 (damned if you do, damned if you don't) A lot of these ideas are GREAT on a small scale and probably at least something better than what we currently have, but when you scale it up to a billion plus vehicles then you can see what an additional strain it becomes by using other methods of power generation aside from oil. I think we'll all become better at recycling and cleaner fuels but so far nothing is without it's ills as well.

I would have to think thousands and each with costs in the multi-million to billion dollar range - so I don't see that working in my lifetime either. All we see is money in the so called civilized world. Nobody seems to really care what our descendants got left from our way of getting things done. Sometimes it's really amusing to imagine what the archeologists do find out about our way of life in, let's say, 3000 years (given that there is anyone left to dig deep enough) _________________________

Yes it does use water but there is another reactant that provides the power. ie. They react water with a reducing agent. I used to be a research chemist and I would suggest that the other reactant would be something like NaBH4 (Sodium Borohydride). To make spurious claims like "A car that runs on water" is misleading in the extreme.

Did you know that up until World War I, the only people who called themselves Canadians were the French Canadians. Ontarians for the longest time never accepted that term. A hundred years ago the term Canadian was equivalent to the modern term Quebecois. That is how the Montreal Canadians got their name & why they are also called the Habs or habitants. PS: I accept no responsibility for what Ontario Hydo does. They never ask me about what to build & everyone knows the only city that counts in this province is Toronto & I do not live there.
