I was wondering what other scripting languages the KiXtart community is using? I know some bits of PHP (enough to fix WordPress and MediaWiki) and I think I'll move toward Python (to get my code running on Linux and Mac OS X as well). And to have multithreading and unicode support.
What would you guys move to?

Well have not checked on the MAC aspect, but RUBY seems to be quite the popular language even with some old PERL die hards.

Runs on Windows, Linux, (not sure about Mac) and it has a lot of power to it. Actually wish / hope KiX will be moving closer to their abilities some day soon.

There are other scripting languages besides Kix?

;\)

After Kix, in order of decresing frequency, I use Perl, various Unix shells (sh/ksh/bask) on Unix or Windows, VBScript, and VBA. I'd say 90%+ of my Windows scripts are Kixtart/Kixforms, with most of the rest Perl when I need special stuff (sockets) or cross-platform capability.

Yes, a long time kixer! I can think in KiX. I even coded a database engine in KiX... until I've found SQLite. And now I'm facing some hard-to-deal-with stuff, like unicode. And doing unicode in KiX is ugly, which explain my desire to move to Python. Maybe my first app should be something like kix2py ;\)

For scripting where KiXtart does not support the features I need, or where it needs to be platform neutral I use ported *nix tools (Bash, awk, X and so-on) provided by Cygwin (the X server is excellent) where the script is going to run on my machine.

If I'm scripting for a more general deployment I try and use PHP - I loathe PERL, and PHP is a more useful skill for me to keep sharp on with it's integration into Apache. It also fits my coding style better and has very good cross platform support.

Okay just checked and yes Ruby runs on WINDOWS/LINUX/OS-X

Have not coded in it myself yet though - just passing along what I've read on some Perl boards where some did not like Perl.

Interesting graph:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=php+example,perl+example,python+example,kixtart,ruby+example

NB: I didn't use 'kixtart example' as there was not enough data.

Does that mean scripting is "out"?

Scripting is so 2003!

Looks like 2004 was the year it all went down hill. What happened then? Some new kind of scripting language became popular or something?

Perl is the scripting tool for my heavy lifting if KiXtart is too lite.
