If it's the long line I think you're talking about it is due to Internet Explorer's interpretation of CSS rules. If you use FireFox 2.x you should not see any long lines when using the CODE TAGS as it will all be contained within a scrolling Window that does not go off screen.
The people over on UBB have attempted to provide fixes for IE but it really is a problematic browser for CSS which has become the defacto standard for most sites now days.
Not sure what you mean by a "max" length as I would not want the software to give me a break where I did not place one. That just attempts to treat the user like a MAC user and make it conform to some view they may or may not want. If the user wanted to have like some sort of word wrap that could be set on their own settings then maybe, but not as a default way of viewing input.
