mima mima Hey THIS is FUN Registered: 2002-01-25 Posts: 217 Loc: Jönköping, Sweden	ok, got that question from a customer, he just began scripting in kix, and have a lot of linux environment. He thought kix was easy and powerful and wondered if he could use the same code in linux environment.

Lonkero Lonkero KiX Master Guru Registered: 2001-06-05 Posts: 22346 Loc: OK	well, it's possible to write an interpreter that would translate to C or perl. but the problem is that kix has lots of stuff that doesn't work in that environment as it's windows special. you can tell your customer to look at TCL (you unix guys can jump in) as I liked it to be close enough in syntax to kix to be rather easy to use as well. _________________________ ! download KiXnet

I've coded in most interpreted / compiled languages available for *nix, and I have to say that PERL takes a perverse pleasure in being difficult to learn. Reading someone elses PERL script is enough to drive you crazy As a good cross-platform, well featured easy to learn language I'd point people at PHP. I use it for all my more complex scripting now, so that I can easily port it between Windows and Linux. Although it started off as a CGI language it is just as powerfull as a stand alone language, either interpreted or compiled. As an example of a non-Web application I use PHP in a bespoke package I wrote to monitor all our routers - auditing config changes, monitoring circuit status, bandwidth use, latency and so on.

I've been able to almost draw straight lines regarding thinking kix and thinking perl, but then - I haven't written anything usefull yet. What I can agree on tho is reading someone elses code, not only will it drive you crazy if written in shorthand, it looks like something a 4 year old doodled with bashing the keyboard $\:D$ . Been thinking about PHP alot, used it a tiny bit a few years ago when building a few private sites, but nothing since then. The only thing regarding cross-plattform, is acctually getting php installed on a win-box... that's not something I wish to do again, ever. But then, php can easily be run via a webserver/browser (doh), so that can take care of most cross-plattform needs $\:\)$ _________________________ as long as it works - why fix it? If it doesn't work - kix-it!

NTDOC NTDOC Administrator Registered: 2000-07-28 Posts: 11634 Loc: Space	Installing PHP on Windows is pretty easy now days Bjorn. Plenty of websites with good examples of manually installing it. I'm not a Webmaster and I updated Korg's PHP manually. It allows you to make some settings to keep Windows a bit more secure than the "automated" installer uses. Installing MySQL manually is probably also better if you're wanting more control over the security. The point being though is that they asked for easy and PERL has BIG learning curve from almost everyone out there that you ask so that's why we don't recommend it. As far as doing the job yes I think PERL is probably more capable of doing anything you want then the other scripting languages due to it's popularity and vast assortment of modules.
