Just as I lurk here, I lurk in the alt.msdos.batch.nt newsgroup. Tonight I saw there that Winternals and Sysinternals were purchased by Microsoft (see: Winternals Announcement ).

I searched the board and did not see notice of this, but if I missed it I apologize. In either case, get your favorite Sysinternals util while they are still available.

Thanks for the post.

Mark is pretty much a "suite" now days anyways. He rarely has time to respond to the average man anymore so being a "FELLOW" at MS will put him where he probably has wanted to be for many years now.

Bryce seems to have remained a bit more on the common mans level and still tries to address issues we all deal with daily. Mark seems to prefer only the "High Visibility" issues that get him more press.

Well I'm sure that really helped their wallets too as their product line has some great stuff but with the down turn in the industry I'm sure it's hard to get as many sales on the big ticket software items.

But ask yourself - If you now work as a noobie with a reputation you're trying to preserve and foster at a new Company that is known throughout the World.... How much time are you going to spend writing new / improved freebie tools?

I just don't think he will have that kind of free time anymore. I think any free time he has will be spent on Family and ways/methods to improve his stature at Microsoft, of which writing freebie tools will probably be way down on the list.

Followup... the old sysinternals webpage is now gone and replaced with the Microsoft version.

Seems like all the utilities are still there, and they have released Process Monitor to replace Regmon and Filemon. Looks interesting.

Yep... changes already. Oh well, to be expected I suppose.
Still some nice tools in the bunch.

Q: May I freely load or use Sysinternals utilities on computers that I support but do not own?
A: No. You will need to contact Microsoft Sysinternals Licensing (syslic@microsoft.com) and inquire about fee based licensing options.

Q: Can I license or re-use any Sysinternals source code?
A: No. We will no longer offer the Sysinternals source code for download or license.

Q: Will Microsoft migrate and host all the Sysinternals tools?
A: No. A small number of tools were identified for removal before the acquisition. We worked very closely with Mark Russinovich to determine which tools to migrate. That said, a majority of the tools will be migrated which include the latest and most popular tools. In addition, we will be open to resurrecting old tools based on community requests.

Q: Will Microsoft change the licensing agreement for the Sysinternals tools and their use?
A: Yes, but we've made the license terms more liberal. Companies can now install and use the software throughout their organization, as opposed to a single user limitation.

I know some of the tools are totally useless but some are really usefull like the process monitoring ones.
even though, afaik, they use WMI, so doing your own shouldn't be a problem. (iirc, we have one written in kix already)

what I really don't see as a good thing is the integration to MS site.
those tools will get buried in the mass of trashy documentation and marketing pages.
well, as long as I know they are there, I might be able to find them in the years to come.

New site at Microsoft.com is now online as part of the Technet site :
www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals

many tools have been updated (filemon, regmon) and some new tools are now available like ProcessMonitor

ProcessMonitor is not a tool to replace ProcessExplorer.
it is a merge of filemon and regmon with many new features.

Filters are much more powerfull, you can save and restore them. They are not destructive in the way that if you apply a filter, some lines are hidden but if you unapply the filter, the lines reappear.

The summaries are very interesting to see which files or registry keys are often read or write.

I am not an expert but this tool will be very useful to analyze problems with applications !!!
