Hi,

Is there a way to start the IE Connections tab - LAN Settings, to give users the possibility to change their proxy settings whenthey are on a different LAN?

shell "%ComSpec% /c control.exe inetcpl.cpl >nul 2>nul" dowsn't start the LAN settings window, it just starts the IE Internet Options window. I was looking for a way to start only the LAN Settings window..

Auto would be nice indeed

Not to write an interface myself and use the M$ interface.. A user switches from our network (specific proxy machine & .ins file) to a network with another proxy server. I want to give him a way to adjust the proxy settings according to the network he's in.

Try it with something like IBM (Lenovo?) Access Connections (works for me on my [IBM]-Notebook)

One can switch between different locations by a single click (even non-admins can be enabled to make these settings iirc).

By this click you can set different IP-Settings (static/dhcp) different IE startpages, set default printers, launch applications etc.

Those events can be also reached by Icons on the desktop.

Why don't you configure a wpad server? As long as users are in the same (dns) domain, the same wpad server is valid. A good wpad.dat script finds out what network the user is in and always points to the right proxy server.
Just enable the "Automatic Configuration" via GPO or via login script.

I use ISA server which manages and hosts its own WPAD, so if you use the ISA WPAD, you are somewhat limited if you share a DNS namespace. True, you could enable netmask ordering, or you can abandon the built-in WPAD and write and host your own that is subnet aware. You can also opt to host WPAD through DHCP option 252 and not worry about the namespace.

Since I am DivIT and share the DNS namespace with other divisions and CorpIT, I opted for DHCP 252. I cannot speak for other divisions nor for CorpIT but suspect that they don't use WPAD. Their loss.

Guys,

Thankz for this info. I could use WAPD on our own domain (however, i don't have problems there), but the real problem is that users connect their machines to another network which i do not control. So, i do not know if they use WPAD. I think i'll have a look at the solution of Jochen or build a similar solution with KiXforms

Well,
If they use WPAD, the user will be redirected to their proxy servers.
If they do not use WPAD, or any other proxy server, IE will time-out in it's search for a WPAD server, and continue as if the check-box for "Automatically detect settings" was never ticked.
I do not think that you or your users will have problems.
I think using the settings "Use automatic configuration script" and "Use a proxy server for your LAN" are less flexible. Here your users will have to change the settings if they are on another LAN.
WPAD gives the advantage of maintaining just one script for everybody.
If your users come into LANS where "Use automatic configuration script" or "Use a proxy server for your LAN" is used, well, they have to change settings according to advice of the network administrators over there.
When your users are back on your LAN, GPO (or login script) resets the connection settings and you do not have to worry.
Maybe just delete Internet Explorer cache in one or another way, as I have seen bizar results when changing these settings.

If the network there is anywhere as disorginized as in my company, every proxy/firewall is governed by different rules ACL'd in different ways so even if the proxy were detected by WPAD, the user would not get out. I did not setup WPAD for the convenience of visiting users becase my rule base would not let them out anyway. I set up WPAD so that MY users would not have to change their settings when they take their laptops home or on the road. If they connect at the Corporate offices or at another division and need internet access, it is not my problem since the solution is out of my control.

Well, that is what I wanted to say with my answer, why I would prefer a WPAD above the other solutions.
