Just as an aside, I never liked how MS defines 'join'. It is highly myopic in my view. MS defines 'join' in a sense that you must be the exact flavour of MS software that they permit to use the word 'join'. Win98 joined old netware & unix domains. The issue of the SID security database was not highly relevant to the functionality of Win98 in an old NT domain. The real issue was the re-director. It is my opinion that MS purposely crippled the re-director in Win9x so it would have difficulties functioning in a netware domain. Novel relatively easily came up with modified Win9x re-directors that restored most of the functionality. In the 5 years that Win9x was dominant in the marketplace surely MS could have figured out the patch as well.
Today of course things have change considerable & Win98 loses too much functionality in modern MS domains. A model T Ford is no longer appropriate on modern high-speed highways & Win9x is no longer appropriate in modern domains. Like everyone else advising on this board, I think the best current strategy is weaning user off Win9x.
