Gee - where have you guys been? There was a Black Hole Diode (BHD) introduced sometime around 1980-81. The opposite of a Light Emitting Diode (LED), it absorbed all ambient light when forward-biased. Unfortunately, since it absorbs all light, no photo of it in operation has ever been taken.

The BHD is the brainchild of Agustus Franken, who developed the Noise Emitting Diode (NED) just a few years earlier. This device was not as successful, since it only emitted a loud noise once when you applied a 200vDC current across the inputs.

Agustus was also credited with the development of the Confetti Generator when he tried to filter AC current with electrolytic capacitors.
