LOL
A slap in the face for people that always shout out that MAC is not hackable and it puts them with the feet back on the ground. I always say that if MAC (or linux/unix) was used in the same proportions as Windows the viruses and patches would be flying around just like they do for Windows environments. At least that is my view on it.

Quote:

On February 22, a Sweden-based Mac enthusiast set his Mac Mini as a server and invited hackers to break through the computer's security and gain root control, which would allow the attacker to take charge of the computer and delete files and folders or install applications.

Within hours of going live, the "rm-my-mac" competition was over. The challenger posted this message on his Web site: "This sucks. Six hours later this poor little Mac was owned and this page got defaced".

The hacker that won the challenge, who asked ZDNet Australia to identify him only as "gwerdna", said he gained root control of the Mac in less than 30 minutes.

hmm...
"the system could have been hardened but that wouldn't have stopped me"

I doubt that a lot.
I don't mean to say that some system is unbreakable but lots of vulnerabilities, even the ones marked as highly critical, are exploitable only under some specific conditions.
if we read the column:
Quote:

set his Mac Mini as a server

that does not really say what he did.
if I put some machine on the net as-is and enable all the server components it has...
well, it would be lot more open than any usual server out there.

again, I don't say that some unix derivative is unbreakable, but it ain't a matter of drinking coffee, hacking the system kinda thing.

anyways, thanks mart for the linky.
I doubt I can shake any mac believer admins with that but nice reading anyways.

Fully agree with Jooel on this. Have not tried every OS, but would venture to say that EVERY OS if placed on the Internet for access right out of the box, fresh install and no Advanced Admin hardening it, would / could be hacked by someone or some group in a short amount of time.

Also agree that even with hardening, given enough time, persistence, and computing power that probably any OS could be hacked too, but MUCH more difficult and much more time to do so.
