I suppose it al depands on the OS.You could copy it directly onto the desktop with Win9x, c:\windows\desktop\
WinNT, desktop stored in the c:\winnt\profiles\username\desktop\
Win2K, the profiles are stored in the c:\Documents and Settings\username\desktop\
from then it's a simple copy.
