Hi all,

There has been a lot of discusions on this board, on which editor to use for KiX-scripts.

I just thought i would share this link to a new freeware editor: KiXscripts Editor

The KiXscripts.com Editor 1.0 beta features...

  • Wizards to simplify the creation of code for: MessageBox, ReadProfileString, WriteProfileString, CHR and Color!
  • Intellisense for automatic syntax highlighting as you type a command.
  • Macro completion; just type "@" and a drop-down list of macros appears for selection.
  • Execute and debug scripts from the editor, optionally instruct command window to stay open after execution
  • Tabbed navigation for switching between loaded scripts
  • Jump to label
  • Right-click on keyword offers link to KiXscripts.com corresponding entry in online reference library
  • Error code display tool (Win32 error code lookup)
  • Variable list view
  • Toolbar buttons for indent/outdent comment/uncomment
  • Launch command prompt menu item
  • Insert environment variable wizard using examples of values on current system.
  • Select display colors for commands, comments, numbers, operators, strings and text.
  • Auto indent feature can account for language scope.
  • Many more features are already included, and more are on the way!

I think it looks very promissing, the intellisense feaure is specially
helpfull, showing the syntax of the function you are just entering (like the VB-editor in the office-suite)

I know there is a lot off hardcore WordPad users on this board, this is NOT for you, don't try it, you might
change editor to the KiXscripts editor

For those of you that are using other freeware editors with syntax-highlighting, give it a try, it is a
dedicated editor for KiXtart scripts.

-Erik

Thanks for the tip, Kholm.
It's a really nice kix editor, and the intellisense is really good.

Why not using VIM?
It's a stable editor which recognized the kixtart language and a few hunderd other languages.
And very important, it's freeware!
You can find more info about it at www.vim.org

I hope this thread doesn't run on like the last discussion did!

Bit OFF TOPIC, editor

One thing's for sure... people sure are passionate about their editor! Me, I just use NotePad.

I am just curious about the Header, If it is "FREE" then why would you not be able to change the header information to what you want?
Right now it says that this function is only available for "REGISTERED" users.
Does this mean that the non-beta version will be at a cost?

Very nice. I've been using UltraEdit (with the KIX stuff in wordfile.txt), which has been fine, but KixScripts editor has more KIX specific functionality.

Don't like the header, though.

And a function to convert text to and from upper and lower case would be keen.

Is this program going to remain free or is this just a teaser?

Aha, I've answered my own question.

Will it remain freeware? here is the answer.

No, this is not a freeware editor; there will be a fee for the final release. Over a thousand hours have been poured into the development of this tool and web site just to get it going. We want to provide something new- an editor geared specifically toward KiXtart (and not just syntax highlighting). Lots of great ideas are still on the table and we are receiving more every day. KiXscripts editor simply cannot become what we all want it to become as a side project. The price has not yet been established, but our aim is to keep it less than the cost of similar editors available.

I would be interested to learn what everyone likes about their selections above, please hop over for a quick poll:

KiX Editor Poll

Thank you, and happy scripting (whatever you use!)

Cripes - does everyone have to turn a buck these days or what ? whatever happened to good old freeware - developed as a labour of love for this wonderfully FREE software product we call kixtart !!! im just glad Ruud didn't take this same attitude early on because we would have dismissed kixtart as a viable solution years ago if that was case (in favor of dos/rk or wsh/vbs) ...

The question is, who will pay money for an application when a number of free alternatives already exist?

I use that wonderful application that comes with Windows, called Notpad. Works everytime, nothing to install and I can use any machine to edit the script. Superb!

Surely, the KixScripts Editor should be in the same vane as Kixtart itself! I think the charities would rather have some cash.

Bob,

I apologize whole heartily for ranting in my previous post there ... writing a kixtart specific (niche) editor surely demonstrates a passion for kixtart on your part ... plus to my mind, anything the forwards the "KiXtart Cause" is a#1 in my books, but my thinking is still along the lines of Ghost's comments. And I guess at the end of the day, the market is always the true lotus of value, and if people are willing to pay for the extra convience of intellisense and function form templates (imho, the only reason i would consider purchasing this product), than more power to you. Good luck with your product !

Sincerly,

-Shawn

Bob, I went to your poll, but notepad isn't on it...

I've tried ConText and ultraedit, and while it was neat with colors and stuff, notepad is faster.

I went to the poll but also could not find my Editor. I use Crimnson Editor which is a freeware editor.

I feel sorry for anyone trying to market a commercial product to users not accustomed to paying.

There's an old saying "Penny wise, Pound foolish" that I wonder if applies. I know everyone enjoys a bargain and it's hard to beat free. If you value your time, and the commecial product proves to be a time saver, then that's where the "bargain" is.

I can see the value in commercial products like ScriptLogic, Visual KiXtart, or a dedicated editor, if it saves you time to do other more productive things or gets you more "family time".

Me... I won't drive to the far side of town to pump my own gas and save a few pennies when I can have full-serve close by and get home sooner.
