hi,
i have a machine to which i had given a static i.p. 220.52.68.1. then i changed the machine's static i.p. to 220.52.68.2.
But the problem is when i try to ping to the machine using "ping machine1", it tries to ping to the 1st I.P. Ideally it should ping to the second I.P.
i have restarted both the test machines & the Server (win 2003).

Check your DNS and/or WINS server database.

Also ensure that you flush the local DNS cache on your machine.

hi,
I flushed DNS cache using ipconfig /flushdns and after that i even restarted the machine. i did the same on the domian controller too.
(while allocating the static I.P. to the machine second time, i had deleted the entry from active directory.)
But still i m getting the same error

Have you checked your DNS server and WINS server databases?

hi Richard,
i cud not find WINS database on 2003 Server. i opened DNS window & performed the "clear cache" operation. that shud have solved the problem i hope, but it didnt.
In the DNS event viewer i m getting error "The DNS server has encountered a critical error from the Active Directory. Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly. ..."
Can this be the real problem ?

The only thing you need to do is update the computer with the new IP address in the DNS server or wait until it auto updates this might not be going ok depending one the exact error you see.
I’d solve the error first.

hey Richard, thanks a lot.
Problem has been resolved. i traversed to the following link:
DNS\"DOMAIN CONTROLLER name"\Forward Lookup Zones\Great.com in DNS window.
here i found the old I.P. for machine1. after updating it, i restarted DNS service & voila, ping is working properly.

When you change the IP on a client, you should re-register it in DNS
IPCONFIG /RegisterDNS
