hi,
Using ghost images, we can install an OS, but updating the static I.P. addr becomes cumbersome, so i was thinking if we cud export registry containing I.P. info. & then after install run the .reg files as soon a user logs in (using kix script).
For that I searched for I.P. in the registry & i got a location like "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{3060234A-F2D6-4C32-964E-F46927079489}".
This means i cant trust a particular location for storing the I.P. address. Is there any other way?

the ip addy can be optained from there trustfully.
there are even udf's that do that.

but, setting the value in the key and hoping to tweak windows... uhm, why? sounds a lot risky.

basically, i have around 10 test machines, which have been allocated static I.P.s. It does not matter what particular I.P. is assigned to them. they shud just have a static I.P.
Machines need to be formatted quite often; so i thought if i cud automate updating the registry, it wud be fine.
i have already automated updating anti virus patches & checking connectivity & day by day it seems, i m becoming more lazy

Writing to HKLM is not possible for default users in Win2K and XP. So you will have to login as an admin to do this.

The way I do it is to have a list of IP addresses in an INI file, using the MAC address of the interface as the key.

I get the MAC address of each interface, then use the dos NETSH command to apply the TCP parameters.

astaalavista, you do a format, reinstall on the machines?
why don't you do unattended install and set the ip and other stuff in the unattended.ini (or wtf the file name was)?

Using ghost images

So, not an install as such.

I use an unintended install environment (written in KiXtart, or course!) for the OS and all the applications. Much better than ghosting or any other sort of image technique. The only drawback is that it is also much slower.

Ghost images are provided by clients, so no chance to make any change to the images.
so only once the image is applied, i can do something.
