Getting the hang of it

I'm going to just throw this one out there hoping that someone might know this. It's not directly related to kix though.

We are in the process of upgrading some of our PC's to thin client boxes running Windows CE. The thin clients don't run scripts and aren't attached to the domain. So the only means of querying them would be through the RDP connection to the Terminal Server.

Is there something we can run in the login script on the Terminal Server that would be able to get some basic info from the devices? Perhaps a third party tool that we can pipe the results out of?

What specific information are you wanting to obtain? How do plan on using the information?

The main things I wanted were the computer name and IP address. As for the purpose, pretty much just for logging purposes. The remote console we have to manage the thin clients is extremely limited and the data contained within it is not easily extracted.

This would make things easier for inventory purposes to track hardware location by the subnet. Also to track which user/s is using a particular thin client. Tracking the user is easy via Terminal Server login script, but associating that user with a particular computer name (thin client) is the hard part.

There are already, in the FAQ forum, links to helper apps that will get that info for you.

Have you checked out the KiXtart FAQ and How to's forum?

http://www.kixtart.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=81649

I have also written an EXE that outputs that data to a file which can be piped into your script via a UDF.

ClientData.exe (613K) Ver: 0.5.0.0
Source: NA

which you can find at http://home.comcast.net/~habullock/Perlutilities.htm

Howard,
Feel free to add your link to that FAQ. Don't you also have something in your HABObects DLL?

Just to follow up with my tool of choice. Howard, the clientdata program was erroring. Can't remember exactly what it said, but for some reason it wasn't able to communicate with the thin clients. However, the wtsmanager was just what I needed. Once the .dll was registered it was good to go.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Thanks for the feedback. I have tested the DLL as well and can say it lives up to its claims.
I'm sure Howard would want to work with you offline to get to the bottom of why his app fell down.
