OK...I have used the Group Policy Editor following MS article 307882 and set the local Group Policy for the proxy server values using the internet explorer settings, and this works for the sample of users I have tried. As the XP machines only number a dozen or so, and as the proxy settings change in geological time, I can do this on each machine without bother.

So now I guess I am down to sorting the printers...any pointers into the thousands of threads the search throws up would be gratefully received
