Guys,

An off topic question about GPO's.

Historical info:
We (before I started work here) had two offices. Both offices had one or more DC's all in the same subnet over a leased line. All GPO's, users, etc... got sync-ed to all DC's in all offices.
About a year ago one office was closed and all the servers moved to the other office. Several servers got a well deserved retirement and are now somewhere partying in the afterlife. One of these server was a DC.

Issue:
After the move and retirement of some servers one GPO cannot be edited or deleted. It's not linked to any OU so it's no longer in use. When I try to edit the GPO a message shows up saying "The system cannot find the file specified.". When trying to delete the GPO the system throws the following message "The server is unwilling to process the request.".

I want to remove the GPO cause it not used anymore but am unable to do so. Anyone seen the before?
Did some googling and searching at MS but no luck yet. Will do some more but any help is much appreciated.

2000? 2003?

Did you check if you can remove the folder manually?

Have you tried to associate it to a test OU and then delete it?

It's on a 2000 domain.
Linked it to an OU, this works fine. Tried to delete it, no luck same errors.
Currently there are 16 GPO's (including the defective one) and only 15 policy folders in sysvol\domainname\policy so it looks like someone deleted the folder already. Then the “The system cannot find the file specified.” error makes sense to me.
Just copied a existing policy folder and renamed it to the unique ID of the defective policy. This work partially. You can edit the GPO and see the settings but still not able to delete the policy.

Even when I import the settings from a backed-up GPO into the defective one the "The server is unwilling to process the request." error still comes up when trying to delete the GPO.
The GPO's folder is created in sysvol\domainname\policy by the import and has the proper privileges set to it.

Will do some more googling and searching at MS.
