Is there an easy way to call a kix startup script from a gpo? What I mean is, do I have to call a batch file that calls a script?

Example contents of batch file:
Code:
\\server\SYSVOL\domain.local\Policies\{AAAAAAAA-BBBB-CCCC-DDDD-DDDDDDDDDDDD}\Machine\Scripts\Startup\kix32.exe \\server\SYSVOL\domain.local\Policies\{AAAAAAAA-BBBB-CCCC-DDDD-DDDDDDDDDDDD}\Machine\Scripts\Startup\script.kx

Is there a easy way to run it w/o the full unc paths?

You should NEVER hard code the server in the path!

You could host it in Netlogon.

Whoops....

I usually use %logonserver%.

So, I either have to move it out to netlogon or path it out?

No, you should not use %logonserver% either.
Since sysvol is replicated to all DCs you can specify \\domain.tld instead. In fact, I find XP boxes to be much faster using \\domain.tld instead of %logonserver%.

If you put all the files in the funky GUID folder, you should be able to get by with relative paths but I prefer to use a BATch file instead.

If you have multiple GPOs would you have multiple copies of KiX salted around? Who wants to open GPMC every time you want to edit the script? Worse yet, who wants to drill down that horrible path to get to the scripts folder? Create a folder structure that matches your OU tree and put your scripts there. All you need in the funky GUID path is the BATch that calls KiX and the script.

There is a FAQ on this subject.

By \\domain.tld you mean \\domain.local or whatever the domain is. I knew that before, but never thought of putting that into a script. I'll look into that apposed to %logonserver%

no, not distribute.
single kixtart executable is needed, say wkix32.exe, for successful script run and it can reside in the same path as your scripts do.

So, maybe keep kix32 at the root of the netlogon share. Maybe even put my scripts there or in subfolders. Basically avoiding the GUID of the GPO is an easier way of dealing with it.

I don't understand the aversion to BATch files for GPO scripts. It is a very easy and clean way to do it. It avoids the long path and saves having multiple copies of KiX all over the place.

I get the feeling Jooel has never even applied GPO scripts and knows not of what he speaks.

eh?
why would using kixtart instead of batch somehow force you to copy kixtart all over the place?
you are not copying the batch file either every damn corner you can find.

why it's so hard to use same techniques without batch files?

Just as I thought. You have never applied a GPO script.

AFAIK there are three basic ways to deploy a GPO script.
1. Rely on search path to find the exe and the script.
2. Rely on currentdir to find the exe and script.
3. Supply the full path to the exe and script.

Can you elaborate then on the particulars of how you would deploy GPO scripts?

tylan, sorry I didn't respond you.
yes, the alternative is to call the kixtart executable directly.
