I know this probably isn't directly related to Kix but you guys have used Kix so much I thought I would ask. We are getting the following error in a couple of our Win2000 computers.

Windows could not execute kix32.exe due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.

The kix script is being applied via a GPO on the domain. It's only a few Win2000 computers experiencing this issue, the rest of the 2000 and all the XP boxes are working fine. The computers in question don't run any scripts at all, but all other GPO settings are being applied properly. Only the scripts applied in the GPO appear to be affected.

I googled this and searched Microsoft's website with no solution. I've tried dis-joining the computer from the domain and re-joining. Also tried resetting the computer account, but no luck.

Any ideas?

Yeah I did Mart. The first response there doesn't apply. We don't set that GPO setting he's talking about. The second response might work, but I shouldn't have to do that. Especially since it's only a couple of computers experiencing this. If it was happening to all my computers I would say sure lets do it, but it's not.

The problem is machine specific whatever it is because if I login as myself on those computers, it doesn't run my login script either.

I'm trying to relocate all our scripts to a script repository inside the Netlogon share, but for now they remain inside the GPO's path on the SYSVOL.

Perhaps we'll just reimage the computers. Seems kind of silly for an issue like that, but I don't know what else to do with them.

Yeah, if the other machines where the script runs ok are setup the same as the machines where the script does not run (also looking at patches and servicepacks),re-imaging might be the best solution then.

This google newsgroup tipped me off Google Newsgroup - Permissions

I'm testing it right now, but what looks like happened is the permissions on the local C drive were messed up. All that was in there was everyone with full control inherited all the way down. Of course that won't work as the local SYSTEM account needs access to certain areas of the C drive that it wasn't able to get to. Surprising though that only scripts were not working and everything else was fine.

Still not sure how the permissions got set that way, but it happened on more than one computer which makes me think it was more than just someone messing around.

Some kind of virus or something? Or a user trying to be a smart ass and fubaring some comps in the process of being smart?
Only the permissions on the not working comps a screwed up? If so then that might be the problem.
Correcting them if they have gone through all files and folders is a hell of a job (undoable I’d say), re-imaging is the quickest way out.
