Microsoft is giving away their Visual Studio Express editions for a limited time (until next year). They were going to charge $49 dollars for them at one point. After next year, you wont be able to get them for free, but those that downloaded during the free offer now can continue to use for free (at least thats my read on it) ...

I know - thats why I said "my read on it..." - if you look at the pricing details FAQ, this is what it says:

Q. You said “free for one year” — what does that mean, exactly? Will you be charging for this later?

A. We originally announced pricing of Visual Studio Express at US$49. We are now offering Visual Studio Express for free, as a limited-in-time promotional offer, until November 6, 2006. Note that we are also offering SQL Server 2005 Express Edition as a free download, and that this offer is not limited to the same promotional pricing period as Visual Studio Express.

Q. Do customers who acquire the Visual Studio Express products during the free promotional pricing period have to pay after the first year if they want to continue to use them?

A. No, as long as you download Visual Studio Express on or before November 7th 2006, you will not have to pay for it.

Any other interpretations welcome ...

The editors are WAY smarter then older versions. I did a upgrade of my Kixtarter code to see how easy it would be to move to .Net v1.1 to v2 and not only did it tell me what it didn't like but for more then half of it I was given a corrected version choice and it updated the code. Very cool.

Well ... SQL Server 2005 Express should be good for most of the Admins out there wanting to do their own home rolled inventory databases but for some reason won't or can't run MySQL

Note though that for those that run stuff like DB2/ORACLE it appears that Microsoft is offering a big discount to switch over. Considering the Enterprise license is $25,000 per CPU that could be a big discount - but that is small in comparison to the programming costs of switching over.

But wait! The generosity from the world's richest software company didn't stop there: Ballmer also announced that Microsoft will be giving 50 percent discounts on SQL Server 2005 licenses to customers who migrate off competing databases, "like Oracle!"

btw,
downloaded some of the VS express images (I wanna have the media always on my HD) and found out that with it, you never need to register.

so, basically, if you or your friend has the image, visual studio express 2005 is free for you and your friends forever.
