I guess it should be a no brainer. Code in KiXTart then use KixForms, right?

What about AutoItX? Both DLLs appear to offer the same functionailty. Does it matter which one is used with KiX?

OK AutoITx has the SENDKEYS heritage of its parent app but with version 3 it has enough parts to throw up a quick and dirty GUI.

Conversly what ties KixForms to KixTart other than fraternal solidarity. Could it be used with VBS say?

Mostly fraternal solidarity your right. But Kixforms was engineered around Kixtart's short-comings (ie, no real COM event handling support).

But I wasn't aware that AutoItX let you build a gui. With buttons and checkboxes and listboxes ... thought it was mostly used to control "other windows" in "other apps" ... good information to know.

And thank you for the pointer to regsrvex for HKCU DLL registeration (see KixForms forums).

Man that's almost damascene in its implications.

Will probably end up still turning KiXForms into an MSI though, just so not to freak out the bossman.

The AutoItX dll does not support creating your own GUI, that functionality is only available with AutoIT. KiXforms will support other scripting languages such as VBS, but like Shawn said is more geared towards KiXtart.

This is going to sound like a silly question but here goes. I know that on has to copy the kixfrom.dll to the windows/system or window system32 directory. I can do that from my logon script based on if the machine is a windows98 or xp machine. From what I read at kixforms.org I then need to do a RUN "regsrv32 kixforms.dll" within that script. Am I correct in assuming that this only needs to be done ONE time and if so how do I check within the script that it has already been done so that I can continue on using kixforms. Also from the kixforms documentation "A message box should appear saying "DLLRegisterServer in kixforms.dll succeeded", simply click ok and continue. The installation is now complete. Well I do not want my users to ever see the message box. I do not want to them to have to click anything or interact with the machine until they get to the desktop. Is there anyway of NOT having that box come up in intial install?

Your assumption is correct.

Most people check that the DLL is installed simply by creating an instance of the object.

If the object creation works then you can continue to use it.

If the object creation fails then copy the DLL and register it. Now try to create the object again. If it still fails you have a problem you will need to deal with manually.

Yes. Type "regsvr32 /?" to see the command line options - you want the "/s" switch.

What exactly do you mean by "creating an instance of the object" ? Could you provide a code example?

Something like this:
Code:

$System = CreateObject("Kixtart.System")
If @ERROR <> "0"
?"Error creating a kixform."
?@ERROR @SERROR
EndIf

It tries to create a kixforms form and checks the @error for success or failure. If success carry on doing your stuff if failure display the failure.

When you use CreateObject("foo.bar") in KiXtart you are creating an instance of the object foo.bar

One of the first thing that you will do in a KiXtart/KiXforms script is to create the KiXforms object. Look at the example scripts to see how it is done.
