But.. If memory serves, you can simplify this quite a bit by using a Policy..

i'm interested in this synchronous thing so i have put the policy in and am trying to test it. explorer does not seem to wait for kix to finish. it just starts right up. is there something i am missing? does this only work on w2k machines? i am testing this on an xp machine in a 2k domain and it doesn't seem to do a darn thing. help!!

The mention in this thread that I am referring to is:
When scripts run synchronised everything will wait until the script is finished. Take a look here: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/docum...n-us/gp/217.asp
-------------------- Mart
The problem with this is, I tried putting this policy in and the desktop still loads before Kixtart finishes. Maybe it's not designed for this purpose.

hmmm, this will work with kixtart scripts too?
since i'm new to policies, i just want to make sure i understand. on the w2k server, i create the policy, assign/link it to an OU and then i have to issue a gpudate command? i thought policies were automatically pushed the next time a client logged on to the network??? is the gpupdate command issued on the server or on the xp clients? thanks! mart is a always a genious.

okay, so here are some clarification questions:
1. when implementing a new policy on a w2k server for an OU that contains XP users, does that get pushed to the client at next logon/restart, or do i need to use gpudate?
2. if using gpudate, is that issued on the xp client? if so, will the client get the policies from the DC or from the local policies?
3. when creating policies in a 2K domain consisting of XP clients, should the policies be created using the xp adm files or the adm files that are on the w2k server? they are very different. for example, the synchronization setting is in w2k, but not in the xp adm. so, maybe that is why this is not working on our xp clients.
thanks!!!

That's what I'm doing.
Okay Mart, here's an update. The reason why this pertains to this thread is because i am trying to remap the My Docs folder (which you helped me with previsouly - thanks a bunch!!!!). in kix, we are using a kill function to respawn the explorer.exr process to read the updated value from the reg. this is working fine, except i'd love to use a policy (i.e. the sync one which is supposed to wait for the logon script to finish before starting explorer). well, i've now got this put in the at the domain level, using the xp adm files and it is soooooo frustrating that it is not working. can anyone thing of anything i missed? i have tried both gpupdate /force and a reboot. As kixtart is running, the desktop appears and all the system tray icons are populated. explorer is finished way before the logon script finishes. therefore, the new My Docs value is not read from the reg after it has been modified by kixtart. grim!!!

Ouch!!! No! This is what it says:
The following GPOs were not applied because they were filtered out ------------------------------------------------------------------- Test Synch Filtering: Not Applied (Empty)
Fast Optimize Disable Filtering: Not Applied (Empty)
Local Group Policy Filtering: Not Applied (Empty)
Logon Sychronization Filtering: Not Applied (Empty)
What the heck does that mean????

okay, so here's what's going on... any policy i set in the users configuration runs fine. anything i set in the computer configuration doesn't process/run at all. there is something about creating a policy in the computer configuration (even though my computer is in that OU) that just won't run.

i read that post and i really thought we were going to solve this. i applied that gpo to the domain and unfortunately, it did not resolve the issue. i guess i'm going to have to keep the kill explorer function in my kix script. it appears as if computer-based policies will not run in my environment.
