Hello,

I have a logoff script that writes an eventlog entry indicating when a user logged off his workstation. Our offline laptop users are having a problem where kixtart will hang (sometimes as long as 10 minutes) at logoff under the following circumstances:

1. They have created a connection to the network. Most of the time this is VPN.
2. Wkix32.exe was executed sometime during their logged on session.

Is appears that when Wkix32.exe gets called at logoff, it is looking for, or waiting for the network. How does Wkix32.exe determine whether to check for domain information or not? I know it shouldn't if run outside of the logon environment but it appears it doesn't realize the network is no longer availabe. Thank you all in advance for any help or suggestions.

Can you post the script? That may help in the diagnosis of what is going on.

When any function or macro is used that gets info from the network. Run a netrwork trace and single-step through the script in debug to see what lines cause the network traffic.

Why? Auditing 101 would tell you that by enabling certain event auditing features, e.g. user logon/logoff, this would be automatically generated at the workstation-level, in addition to the domain-level. There's absolutely no need to utilize Kixtart for this.

The entire script is a follows (if it helps)

$x=logevent("4","2","@userid Logoff Event","","LogoffScriptStart")
exit

I don't believe this to be a script issue, I believe it to be an issue with wkix32.exe running while the network is closed or closing. I can prove this by comparing the time I actually logoff and when the event acutally gets written in the event log.

I understand the reply about the accounting 101 but office politics takes precidence over common sense!

I suspect the @UserID is causing a trip to the network. Ruud makes a point of pre-fetching a whole bunch of macro data when one is first called, in order to avoid repeat trips. This can easily be confirmed by running a network trace.

Try using %USERNAME% instead.

???

So, office politics dictate to you that you have to use a scripting language for the purpose of creating an audit trail instead of (relatively) secure build-in auditing at both the local and domain level? I sure hope you're not working for a public company as this will guarantee you to fail SarbOx audits.
