HI All,
I have an interesting question. We are running NT 4.0 servers. Every Dept has a folder in teh Dept drive. Is there a way to map everyone to the same Dept share but only show them the folders they have access to?

Thanks
David

I do not think this is possible because the user will presumably have rights to read/list the dir which holds the restricted subdir by virtue of inherited rights. You could try denying explicitely denying access to the resource for the user.

Something like:
C:\Test ---> R/E
C:\Test\Mine ---> R/W/E
C:\Test\Yours ---> No access

Give it a try, let me know how it works.

I gave that a try, but it does not work. I think that, using your example, by giving c:\test R/E rights it makes it possible to scan the contents of test and see everything even if you do not have access to it.

I personaly think this cannot be done, but I thought that i would troll for Ideas to get my boss of my back

This is not possible in NT. What you could do is share the folder as a hidden share e.g. \\server\share$, and map that share to the drive. That way the users can't see the other shares.

This does not change the issue of users seeing sub-directories they do not have access to within the primary share they properly have access to.

Jazzkid, one method that will probably work from a technical aspect, but I suspect not from a daily end-user use aspect, is to make the folder(s) hidden, then change Windows Explorer value for selected systems to not show Hidden/System files.

Registry key value is "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Policies\Advanced, Hidden". Set to '1' to block viewing of Hidden, '0' to enable viewing. Also may need to set "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Policies, NoFolderOptions" to prevent users from changing option to view hidden/system files. Again, '1' to prevent viewing of the options, '0' to enable viewing/changing the options.
