Getting the hang of it

I work in an enterprise environment where we deploy our images using ghost. After the image is loaded it runs sysprep. The main hangup we have right now is that sysprep requires us to manually input the computer name. I'm trying to develop an unattended way to input this name. We are running Win2k and WinXP.

At the end of sysprep you can set it to run a program. My question is this: Would it be possible to script a computer name change based on the local mac address?

Taking that one step further, would it be possible to keep a database on a server and in your script it looks against the database to match the local mac address and then uses the matching records computer name?

This would then allow us to completely automate desktop deployments. What would we use to do this? WMI? Does anyone know if WMI is even loaded at the end of sysprep? If it isn't, what other methods do you think I could query for the local MAC at the end of sysprep. Any ideas?

Well hopefully Radimus will stop by soon. He has spent a lot of time lately working on automated installs of XP.

He might have some advice for you in this area.

What I have it do it pick a random name, often NICs aren't fully enabled at the end of mini-setup, many are, but not all.

Let mini-setup run through, join workgroup, and then have it restart with an autoadminlogon 1 time. The have it run whatever code to do an SQL query or ini read from a net share to get the name. It will need an account for net access and to join the domain.

There are a few scripts here already to rename and join domain

Actually I was able to accomplish this with a program called WSName.exe and a simple batch file tagged on the end of sysprep. It works perfectly.

Thank you for the replies. Great to know people are responding

I have the same problem and i also found WSName only yhe batch doesn't work if i test it.

test.bat
-----------------
cd\
cd test
WSName.exe /rdf:"mac.txt" /dfk:%mac /rcid /user:Administrator /pass:p4ssw0rd

If i go to the command prompt and I typ
cd\
cd test
and I paste this rule ( with other credentials )
WSName.exe /rdf:"mac.txt" /dfk:%mac /rcid /user:Administrator /pass:p4ssw0rd

then it works ( sorry my english is not so good i'm from holland )
