A more crude alternative is to look for the file VMwareUser.exe under %programfiles%\vmware\vmware tools\ but that's not reliable when the guest doesn't have vmware tools installed. There's also (optionally) a control panel applet with a registry key at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Control Panel\Cpls named VMCPL with a path value assigned (if VMware tools are installed)
