Hello,

Does anyone know how to protect a software application that you made. What I mean by protection is to make your software into a shareware application that the user can try out, and if they like it, buy it from the software writer. I have tried various programs that will generate a locked program and the user calls with a registration number and then it can be unlocked. Those programs will only lock a .exe file, not a .kix file. Is there any UDF to do this in KIX? Does anyone know any programs that will do the same thing but that work with .kix files?

Thanks for your help,

-Michael

well, you can build the lock into your script directly.
as simple as write a value to registry for first install date. crypted ofcourse and to such location nobody knows to check.
then just check that value.

now, a cracker can work that out, like any other normal locker but then you can go further.
anyways, this is the basic locker type and should work just fine.

other aproach on the same thing is to check the script file date and maybe even combination of it and the value in registry.

while these are ok, what you really would need for good and cool, is to make your script check and inform via internet.
as example, AdminScriptEditor does that kinda thingie...

and needless to say, tokenize your script, otherwise it's sooooo easy to reverse engineer it.

when using the registry... the hklm\software\microsoft\mouse is not a good location.

I have some vendor software that was writing its "uber secret" print counter information to this key (we have to pay for a number of print counters in this software). The thing is, the users needed admin rights to run the program and i at first could not figure it out, since users with admin rights were causing me no end of headaches.

I got on the phone, started talking with the tech support guy, and he just flat out told me... you have to run the program with administrator rights. I told him not good enough he told me tough titty... this went on for a little bit.

I then... whiped out reg mon, ran the "admin only" program.. and saw it toush the microsoft\mouse key, and i thought that was very weird. Sure enough there was one cryptic looking entry. i gave the user change rights to that key, and the program was able to run just fine with user rights

I did call the tech guy back up (small company only a few techs) and asked him, now, what was so damn hard about telling me about the microsoft\mouse key?

Just as a friendly warning:

This comes directly from the KiXtart Manual. So, unless you have Ruud's express written consent that allows you to distribute your script for profit, you're dead-in-the-water.

I would disagree. You may not distribute the KiXtart application, but you can distribute your SCRIPT for profit if you can manage to pull it off. It would then be up to you or your client to download KiXtart from a valid resource with which to run your script.

You have a couple of options.

You can package the script using an EXE which unloads the script then runs kix32.exe with the unpacked script as a parameter, or you can include the license check within your script.

Packaging the script will allow you to use one of the tools that you've already identified, however as the script is unbundled there is the possibility that it can be recovered and used directly, avoiding the license check.

The better option is therefore to build the license into the script and tokenise the script so that it is hard to defeat the mechanism.

You cannot easily hide the license registration, as tools like RegSnap and FileMon will reveal where you write it. Not useful if the user can then set up a task to remove the registration on a regular basis and so run the application permanently.

Better solutions are either to hard-code an end-date for unlicensed versions or disable/reduce the functionality.

If you go with the fixed end date you will need to update the download regularly, and be prepared to accept that some people might simply download and re-install when they get close to the end date.

The reduced functionality might be that the program only returns a certain number of values, exits after a fixed period of time or has some menu options removed, and is probably the best solution.
