as discussed in:
http://www.kixtart.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB14&Number=127279&Forum=UBB14

MS gave out the cdburner in a reskit, and lo, it's nice.
but problem is, I can't make it to burn anything.

I have made a RAW cd image (iso/bin) of my xp cd (to keep it bootable) and all the burner does it say: "can't verify image file"

wtf?

Try http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/portal/download.php?mode=ViewCategory&catid=5
Use can use this to mount the image to a drive letter to check it. Also in the CDRTools package (available on the web) is ISODUMP.EXE that will let you examine the iso file.

the problem is that I don't want to dumb it nor I don't want to view it.
I have full isobuster so surely I can view it when I want and dumb or extract stuff if I want.
but I don't.

as explained above, I want to keep the CD intact.
I wanna have a perfect backup copy of the cd on HD and I want to be able to BURN that backup IMAGE.

now, if I would extract the data, and burn it, it would not be the same cd anymore.

nor, viewing the image with daemontools will not burn it for me.

Drop.ISO.on.me.to.burn.CD.cmd
Code:
 @echo off
for /F "usebackq" %%i in (`"\\wheelerc\shared\findcd.com -a"`) do set CD=%%i:
\\wheelerc\shared\cdburn %cd% %1
\\wheelerc\shared\cdr open %cd%
echo done
pause

ja, that's the iso image burn stuff from the other thread.
but it's just same as saying on commandline "cdburn drive imagename"
sorry.

kinda stupid this sounds...
there are the methods (well, like MS said, this tool supports raw-images) but nobody really explains them.
I start to think that what that raw means is image that contains only cd-data in raw format.
not a real raw image.

if you want a freeware 'nero-like' tool, look at CDBurnerXP

ok, went on and tested, cdburn can't burn raw tracks either.

wonder, read somewhere that roxio burner can't handle raw at all but needs TAO...
could this be the limit with MS products too...

thanks for the link rad.
will check on it.
what I actually want is to have a tool that can write images.
nero and easyCDcreator both are buggy on that part but keep finding no good alternatives.

ok... perhaps your problem is that you need to choose a different method to create your ISO

If you are trying to include some form of copy protection, look into fireburner

ja.
my image may contain way too much data.
say, I was able to burn with cloneCD but the outcome was 0 byte disc
looking at the disc at isobuster reavealed that cloneCD only burned the track info, not the data itself

k, asked this from "the source of my confusion"
that is ISOBuster guru, Peter Van Hove.
and indeed, there seems to be "two levels" of raw.

Quote:

I come from the CD/DVD Drive industry and I'm familiar with low level stuff where there is NO use of file-systems and the lot.
When a host (software) reads data, that data is either read as "user data"
or "raw". There are distinct different methods of reading the data and the data returned and that is stored in the file is different.
Now, on a much higher level, the file-system level, I can imagine that people make a distinction between just the file-data (user data) and the complete data from start till end containing also the file-system information (which would then be raw, where in fact this is still simply user data on drive level)

Jooel,

Not sure what you're doing. Every CD burning program I can think of can easily burn the original XP CD and keep it bootable. As far as I can tell there was no protection methods on the Enterprise CD. (don't know about the Retail version) However, if you allow CloneCD to copy the CD and create an image of it, it will burn a copy for you and keep another image on the Hard Drive. Unless you're just determined to do it with some specific method, this will work. I've done it many times. I can go burn a copy right now and put it in a new Computer with an unformatted hard drive and it will boot from the CD and install XP on the system.

sure.
that's not the issue.
the issue was that there was no specification which type of image the ISO image needs to be for cd writing softwares to write it.

the faq link was good.
it just clearly said ppl are calling images ISO when in fact their images normally just are images of the iso-9660 filesystem, not CD images.

Dear,

First all kind of CD image which aren't ISO type will be converted to an ISO-type. ISO-type is much smaller as f.e. BIN-type.
Secondly we make them with SoftDisc available when we don't burn them on a normal way on our CD/DVD.
Third when we want to use the bootable capability we are using Nero or Easy CD Creator to burn them temporarily on a rewritable CD/DVD.

Of course is can be necessary to keep your software up-to-date to manipulate recent images. F.e. the differences between Nero 5.x and 6.x is the way it can handle long filenames.
greetings.
