Subject: SP2 creates a bug in Word XP and Word 2003

This has been confirmed by 7 users of SP2.
If you are using Word XP or Word 2003, either stand-alone
or as editors for Outlook, and you have upgraded to SP2
you will discover the following bug:
Open Word XP or Word 2003.
Click View.
Click Toolbars.
Click Web Tools.
Click the Sound icon (bottom left corner of the Web Tools
box).
You will get the following error message:
"This object was created in HTMLInlineSoundCtl.
This application is not available to open this object.
Make sure the application is properly installed and that
it has not deleted, removed or renamed."
If you are running with SP1, you will see a dialog box
entitled "Background Sound" and then you'll have entries
for browsing for the name of a sound clip and also a box
to enter the number of times you want the sound
to "loop." This ability is no longer available with
SP2.
I have VBA enabled in the Office Shared Features for
Office 2003.
By the way, if you click on the Movie icon in the Web
Tools box (last icon on the right), you will get a very
similar error message. There is apparently some glitch
between SP2 and OLE objects. I'm sure there are more but
because this one is directly related to a Microsoft Office
product, I find it disappointing.

I have installed SP2 on the computers in our computer
labs. Some computers are brand new Dells, and some have
been around for sometime. After installation all avi
files encoded with Indeo 5.10 and Cinepak no longer
play.Files encoded with Microsoft MPE6-4 Vl or V2 play
fine. All files play fine locally with Mediceplayer 9 ,
and all play fine in the Web pages before installation of
SP2. This is a huge headache for us, because many of our
training videos use the Indio codec. Is this a bug, or is
this by design?
I have turned off the firewall to see if it makes a
difference, but it does not.

Overall Microsoft has patched a lot of things and SP2 includes all the previous hotfixes/pataches so you don't need to make a hundred other downloads.
So far very few breaks in code. The vast majority of reported issues involve having the firewall now enabled by default. When the firewall is either disabled or modified to allow the application to work most problems are resolved.
The same issue would happen with any firewall a user installs, ports need to be opened to allow certain applications to operate as they were written.
Overall I think SP2 is a good thing for Windows XP, but I would recommend waiting / checking that all your applications and hardware work correctly before just blindly rolling it out. I'm sure that in the next couple of months any real issues will be resolved and there won't be as much fear of installing SP2a

The Application Compatibility Testing and Mitigation Guide for Windows XP Service Pack 2 considers
potential application compatibility issues that may arise after a Service Pack 2 deployment. The guide
provides mitigation procedures that can be followed to overcome compatibility issues.
Since the mitigation procedures relax the default security configuration, the guide in no way recommends
that they should be followed, but if there is no other way of overcoming compatibility issues, they can
be applied in the short term.
The Guide also includes a download of example scripts. The scripts demonstrate how to reconfigure
a Service Pack 2 computer to overcome compatibility issues. The scripts are designed as functional
samples and will require modification for use in a production environment.
