I've recieved a request to help desktop support push out an install of Ghost to Win9x clients. They have no trouble with Win2k and XP machines since they have WMI installed. I'd like some opinions on the best approach? This is going to be a one time deal since desktop will be able to push out their own installs once the initial install is done. I'm definately concerned about pushing an install at login time. I've looked over Jens KSMS code and it definately is a masterpiece of code writing, but it's a lot more comprehensive than my needs. I'm wondering if scheduling a task to run at some time would be a better solution? Opinions are appreciated.

Maybe try a broadcast? You may need to be careful with this and MultiCast as there can be significant bandwidth issues.

Ha...funny you should mention that. The guys in desktop got their hands slapped for running broadcast for a short period of time last month so that is out.

I believe the purpose is to take advantage of "ghost console".

Why? Why do you need a Ghost Console at a workstation? Let's think about this.. What is Ghost's primary purpose in life? To push/pull images to/from desktops. The way we are using it is to do a broadcast to several (8-12) workstations at one time. This is using a RIS Server and works quite well. If you need to do the opposite, then you restart your workstation and use PXE and connect in and create your .GHO file based on your OS. If you are running 2000/XP, you will want to use Microsoft's Sysprep.

Sorry for the lecture, but beyond this just does not seem right.

This is a pretty simple view into this, but should give you ideas.

Kent

My bad...I should of said "to take advantage of Ghost Console by installing the ghost client on each workstation".

I think we understood that part.

or at least, like I said before, there is nothing to use in ghost other than the server and client floppies/cd's.
imho.
