Subject: Windows XP Service Pack 2 was RTM (Released to Manufacturing).

Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) has been released to maunfacturing.

The relevant end-user schedules for 2004 are:

August 06 Release to manufacturing.
August 09 Release to Microsoft Download Center (network installation package).
August 09 Release to MSDN subscription site (CD ISO image).
August 16 Release to Automatic Updates.
August 16 Release to Software Update Services.
August xx Release to Windows Update.

Microsoft considers Windows XP Service Pack 2 as an essential security update and is distributing it as a 'critical update' via Windows Update (WU) and the Automatic Updates (AU) delivery mechanism in Windows. Microsoft is strongly urging customers with Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 1-based systems to upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 2 as soon as possible.

idk - has anybody done extensive testing with SP2 and can maybe give an overview as to what the impact will be. We know that SP2 will break many of our apps. Even from an admin script stand-point, where we first PING all our wkstns to see if they're alive, are going to be dead-in-the-water (afaik) unless we change things.

How do you mean?

I've been running XP SP2 Beta at home an haven't noticed anything odd, but I have a growing number of XP Pro PC's at work and I'm not prepared for any SP2 problems.

Ja - was reading stuff like this - think the ping port will be blocked by default.

Quote:

Notice that the default setting for Windows Firewall is On (recommended) for all the connections of a computer running Windows XP with SP2 and for newly created connections. This can impact the communications of programs or services that rely on unsolicited incoming traffic. In this case, you must identify those programs that are no longer working and add them or their traffic as excepted traffic. Many programs, such as Internet browsers and email clients (such as Outlook Express), do not rely on unsolicited incoming traffic and operate properly with Windows Firewall enabled.

In the Corporate Environment it is fully configurable via GPO settings. So should not be too big of an issue for Corp users from that stand point, but there are other possible issues that will need to be tested for each Company becuase eveyone has different applications and runs their systems differently.

When it comes to compatibility issues, GPOs are not going to be your salvation. Sure, certain options could be configured with GPO, but judging by the number of inquiries for reg hacks, I would say that not many companies use GPOs. Not to mention all those still on NT4 domain.

IMHO, including SP2 in AU is just plain stupid. What were they thinking?

easiness.
no need to think for a proper solution as long as this one works.

well, AU has caused some problems.
like the need to rebuild my home w2k system.
but it really seems that MS thinks this gets the best benefits.
the home users which have AU turned on, are getting updated and most of the corporate users don't use AU.

after all, most of the hotfixes are not even needed in properly protected environment.
like, around 98% of them are pure security blobs that don't affect anything in good way in closed environment.

No, but I have installed the RC2 on a couple of systems at work. Did not notice any issues with installing it. But did not do any type of extensive testing.

Is it broken due to blocked ports of the firewall or because of some other DLL fixes by Microsoft?

If it's the firewall you could probably mod to work, if a DLL change then yeah the author will need to mod around it.

k.
I got first client crying why the machine just suddenly rebooted.
there were 3 ppl looking at the screen.

1 normal user
1 software administrator (our corps only one)
1 software provider's IBM specialists

they just said it said something and then went suddenly down.
heh, I didn't remember the SP2 before they said the date, 16th and I started laughting.
there is our hope in these weird dudes that get in month about the same salary as I do in a year

anyway, aftermath:
-installs without warning
-install can't be stopped nor delayed (the status is showed though)
-reboots automatically without asking anything

in english, Shiat!

Do you know if this dude had AU turned on? If so, was it set to auto-install the SP? Other AU settings?

Over the weekend I worked on a home PC. I was telling the guy that he should wait a while before installing SP2, and went to check the the settings on AU, so that it wouldn't install automatically. When I got to the AU settings, the options looked different (included pictures of a red and green sheild). I thought that was a little odd, but thought maybe Symantec or some other program had modified it... but last night I installed SP2 on my home pc... and now I have those red and green sheilds... this guy is not savy enough to have installed the SP himself... it appears AU maybe deploying already.

I've noticed a few other things since installing SP2... when booting, it no longer says "Windows XP Professional", it just says "Windows XP"... and Boot time seems longer.

If anyone wants the direct download of SP2 it can be found here: Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers

I was noticing the different AU icons on nonsp2 systems last week. Had to do a double take and make sure that these systems didn't have sp2 on them, they did not.

and yes, boot times for sp2 seem to be longer.

ugh... i had to change 70+ remote systems by hand last thursday and friday to point to the corporate SUS server.

The big thing we are having is with the Intel Video Card and CarbonCopy. We havea limited deployment of SP-2 at this time.
