Just got this in e-mail:

-----Original Message----- From: JSI, Inc. [mailto:<removed>] Sent: Sat 8/7/2004 3:06 AM To: Kent Dyer Cc: Subject: Windows XP Service Pack 2 was RTM (Released to Manufacturing).
Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) has been released to maunfacturing.
The relevant end-user schedules for 2004 are:
August 06 Release to manufacturing. August 09 Release to Microsoft Download Center (network installation package). August 09 Release to MSDN subscription site (CD ISO image). August 16 Release to Automatic Updates. August 16 Release to Software Update Services. August xx Release to Windows Update.
Microsoft considers Windows XP Service Pack 2 as an essential security update and is distributing it as a 'critical update' via Windows Update (WU) and the Automatic Updates (AU) delivery mechanism in Windows. Microsoft is strongly urging customers with Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 1-based systems to upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 2 as soon as possible.

Even from an admin script stand-point, where we first PING all our wkstns to see if they're alive, are going to be dead-in-the-water (afaik) unless we change things.
How do you mean?
I've been running XP SP2 Beta at home an haven't noticed anything odd, but I have a growing number of XP Pro PC's at work and I'm not prepared for any SP2 problems.

Ja - was reading stuff like this - think the ping port will be blocked by default.

Notice that the default setting for Windows Firewall is On (recommended) for all the connections of a computer running Windows XP with SP2 and for newly created connections. This can impact the communications of programs or services that rely on unsolicited incoming traffic. In this case, you must identify those programs that are no longer working and add them or their traffic as excepted traffic. Many programs, such as Internet browsers and email clients (such as Outlook Express), do not rely on unsolicited incoming traffic and operate properly with Windows Firewall enabled.

Over the weekend I worked on a home PC. I was telling the guy that he should wait a while before installing SP2, and went to check the the settings on AU, so that it wouldn't install automatically. When I got to the AU settings, the options looked different (included pictures of a red and green sheild). I thought that was a little odd, but thought maybe Symantec or some other program had modified it... but last night I installed SP2 on my home pc... and now I have those red and green sheilds... this guy is not savy enough to have installed the SP himself... it appears AU maybe deploying already.
I've noticed a few other things since installing SP2... when booting, it no longer says "Windows XP Professional", it just says "Windows XP"... and Boot time seems longer.
If anyone wants the direct download of SP2 it can be found here: Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers

The big thing we are having is with the Intel Video Card and CarbonCopy. We havea limited deployment of SP-2 at this time.
