I (we) were just given some good advise by our corporate security department - they just sent out a note to everyone recommending that if you have Automatic Updates turned on - to shut it off. MS will be publishing Windows XP SP2 shortly, and if your on auto-update, you'll get it. And you may not really want it - at least until you figure-out what it might break.

At least with SUS, it should be considered a new updated, and then have to be approved before it will be deployed... (I hope )

ja, here's a quote from our interal memorandum - pretty strong words:

Quote:

Microsoft XP Service Pack 2 will automatically be downloaded to your workstation when released causing you serious internal application issues. Once again the XP Service pack 2 must not be installed to a desktop or laptop unless for official testing reasons.

Hmm. Do you know for a fact that Automatic Updates (not SUS/WUS) will push out a service pack? My experience has been that AU just does critical updates, not SP's.

I'm generally a trusting person, but just to be safe - we're testing this out with a fresh XP with no SP1, going to give it a try ... will advise ...

My buddie here (at work) wants to take bets on this - he says the loser has to dress-up like a belly-dancer, make a stupid pose, and post a picture of this to korg. Any takers ? ;0)

I'd take that bet. Otherwise I'd be all Service Packed to SP4 on all of our Windows 2000 systems.

Ok, before you take the bet - go to windows update and try to make sense of this official microsoft statement:

Quote:

What can you do now to ensure you get Windows XP Service Pack 2?
-
The best way to get Windows XP Service Pack 2 is by using the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP. Visit the Protect Your PC site to let us turn it on for you or follow three manual steps—either way you’ll get Service Pack 2 automatically as Microsoft releases it. Turning on Automatic Updates today allows your PC to begin downloading important updates automatically, including the latest version of Windows Update. It also ensures you will receive future updates, such as Service Pack 2.

Hmmm. Well, since "they" put it that way...

It looks like they may be changing the behaviour of AU for XP SP2.

We may need an official (MS) ruling on this.

My buddy here says the "internet buzz" is that Microsoft has changed the release date of Windows XP SP2 from end-of-August to "imminent" (whatever that means).

Not a big deal. I already dress up like that at home. I might get some stares from my office mates, however.

Well, kinda. A lot.

We use AU (w/o SUS/WUS) to deploy Critical Updates (and I'm not alone according to polls taken by myITForum). I'll have to turn off AU because we haven't finished our assessment of the impact that SP2 will have on our XP systems. This means that it will effectively break our current patch management system.

We are in the process of rolling out SMS 2003, so we do have something in the works. What I may do is write some GPO scripts that will continue to allow AU to run on all non-XP OS's and shut it down for XP.

My opinion is that this is very bad mojo on Microsoft's part.
