It is with great pleasure that I am announcing a new KiXgolf tournament.

This round's theme resolves around cryptography, thus get your ASCII tables ready :-) The cipher in question is called Vigenere and is a polyalphabetic substitution cipher.

The tournament starts Saturday, July 24, 3pm EST with a private coding phase lasting until Friday, July 30, 8pm EST. The public coding phase will then last until Sunday, August 8, 9pm EST.

The usual rules apply and for information on KiXgolf and the previous tournaments, see the KiXtart BBS at http://www.kixtart.org/ubbthreads or search the kiXtart BBS with keyword "KiXgolf".

do I read wrong or is this one those silly thingies that don't support neither case-sensitivity nor scandinavian letters
so, to be able to use this, one would need to first translate to some substition algorithm similar to base 64.

I get an "Error in expression"...

works now.
I made a boo-boo when added some code for board users.

btw, this thingie is totally unusable as such.
improved version which has special characters and case-sensitivity...
say, support for 256 characters, that would be usable.
and I think I might even create such.

I've a good solution, but I'll be away in sunny Marbella for that week.

Is there anyone not participating who wouldn't mind holding the code for me and tweaking it to fit the golf template?

I'm sure the task is not to create vigenere cipher itself, but something around it.

My guess too,

think it will be hacking / cracking the code... Or find the "key"

I've tested one cracker and it failed.
the problem with the cracker is that what more possibilities you have with keyword lenght, that more you have possibilities for failure, and so on.
what shorter text, yet again false positives...

but something about cracking it might be.

Ah, that would be more of a challenge.

I found a site with a Java based cracker which was very interesting. It required manual intervention to interperet the results and retry but the technique it used was interesting.

I don't think that a 100% successful automated cracker is at all possible, although one that can offer a number of likely results should be.

Selecting an couple of unlikely characters like "Q","X" and "Z" to use as word punctuation will peturb the letter frequency sufficiently to defeat the letter frequency analysis method of determining key word length and alphabet shift.

In that case I'll post my code.

I wrote mine as a test but then saw bryce's vigen and decided to post mine as it was totally different.
then, for some reason hoby took on it and wrote his own... quess he started really competing...
and posted when was told that this was not all the next golf would be about...
on his part I'm just quessing, m'kay?

Well don't see you or Jens online right now so don't think you will be on time for Golf.
