I need to run a batch file, or Kixstart, from a diskette. I need to go from computer to computer, running a software audit of the computers. Now here's where is gets tricky.

I computers from Windows 95 through Windows XP. I will be dealing only with computers that are networked. When I do the audit, running a batch file (or Kixstart) from the diskette, I need to know if I have a Windows 9x computer or non-9x computer. This will determine which version of the audit software to run.

What I need is something doing the following:

1 - Determine OS being used, either automatically or via a prompt

2- delete a couple files from root after changing attributes to +r+s+h

3 - If a 9x OS, run the 9x version of the audit software

4 - if non-9x OS, run the non-9x version of the audit software

Due to the way this network is setup, and the departments being covered (long story as to why), I need to have the batch (or Kixstart) file on the diskette and the actual audit software is on a server.

Is there a way to run Kixstart on a diskette???

Hello Azism and welcome to the board.

Yes KiXtart can easily run from a diskette.

Download KiXtart 4.22 from the board here and write up the script to do what it is you want to do.

As simple as it looks like you're wanting you could just as easily write it in BATCH and have it run faster then having to load KiXtart from floppy each time.

You can use something like this for a batch file that will LOAD much faster.

Code:
@ECHO OFF
VER | find "5.2" > nul
IF not errorlevel 1 GOTO Win2K3
VER | find "2000" > nul
IF not errorlevel 1 GOTO Win2K
VER | find "NT" > nul
IF not errorlevel 1 GOTO WinNT
VER | find "95" > nul
IF not errorlevel 1 GOTO Win95
VER | find "XP" > nul
IF not errorlevel 1 GOTO WinXP
VER | find "98" > nul
IF not errorlevel 1 GOTO Win98
VER | find "Millennium" > nul
IF not errorlevel 1 GOTO WinME
GOTO NotFound
GOTO END
:WinME
ECHO Found Windows ME
GOTO END
:Win98
ECHO Found Windows 98
GOTO END
:Win95
ECHO Found Windows 95
GOTO END
:WinNT
ECHO Found Windows NT
GOTO END
:Win2K
ECHO Found Windows 2000
GOTO END
:WinXP
ECHO Found Windows XP
GOTO END
:Win2K3
ECHO Found Windows 2003
GOTO END
:NotFound
ECHO Unable to determine OS
GOTO END
:end
:: Remove the pause for production and the :: from the EXIT
pause
:: EXIT

If you only want difference between any 9x and any NT then trim down the batch file and add the file copy or delete you want and then launch the appropriate audit software.
