thought I would carry-over the timedate conversation from this thread:

http://www.kixtart.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB2&Number=121379

here. Interesting problem just crossed my desk. Like good MS citizens we didn't give our user settime privilege on their new XP boxes (they had in under NT), now I'm getting complaints from "the field" that they can't double-click on the tray clock anymore, to bring-up the time and date calander - which im told they use quite a bit in their daily routine.

Figured MS would have still allowed it to come up in "read-only" mode but guess not, anyone got any quick-fixes (other than installing some third-party product) ?

Can't they use the calendar in their email/scheduling client?

yeah, that would be ideal if our user's were running Outlook or something like that - I am embarrassed to say we are still running Netscape mail as our only mail client - this will be changing in due course (if I have anything to say about it), but not in the short-term.

thx Howard, nothing against Netscape - I'm sure Netscape Communicator is a *fine* product, just not my cup-of-tea ;=) I did take your suggestion and quickly flipped through the Netscape menus looking for a calendar - didn't see one - anyone ?

One of my more "pro-active" co-workers challenged Microsoft on this - here's "their" response. Of interest mostly for the "P.S." ...

Quote:

I don't think we'll get far with [your] users being able to use the calendar
from the system tray. There's no notion of read-only access to the
Calendar. If you're in either the Administrators or PowerUsers groups, you
can open the applet and change the time, etc. If you're in neither, it does
not even open. Read-only access would be better, but the current behavior
is by design, so we shouldn't expect it to change short term.

The behavior is described in Q300022 "You Cannot Set the Date, Time, or
Time Zone on Your Computer"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;300022

An alternative would be to have someone create a quick app (or look for some
code examples) to implment a simple calendar pop-up.

[Microsoft]

P.S. the tie-in between authentication and time is part of the
Kerberos standard. Keeping the Server and client roughly in sync w.r.t. the
current time plays an important role in preventing replay attacks. In such
an attack, a 3rd party would sniff credentials on the network and try to
resend them to the server, pretending to be the original client. A common
understanding of the current time at both client and server assists in
detecting and preventing such an attack.

I assume you are looking for a reg hack, but is installing another time/date applet an option?

If so TClockEx will work as a user. I've used this program on and off for years. It has great calendar features, is free and has no associated spyware.

hmmm, think this might be datetime overkill - it exposes a few things that we don't want our user's customizing. like the toolbar etc. Even in "booth mode" (restricted access) too much stuff is exposed. Any other suggestions ? Anything that is just a plain-old-calendar and not much else ?

I have used TcClockex as well, but looks kind of funky under XP.

Shawn,
How about creating your own? You're a smart guy.

The only other one I run across is DateManager... but when I say ran across, I've only seen it on PCs with spyware on it... Its free, but at a cost.

Do I take it that you only want the users to have read only access? or could you not add Domain Users group to the local machine GPO?

Not wanting to teach granny to suck eggs but this can be found in MMC > Console > Add/Remove Snap-In ... Add > Group Policy. Then select Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies >User Rights Assignment. Change the system time.

Forgot to add does anyone know how to change/read the local GPO policy via a script remotely. It would be very useful.

Rory, ja - we didn't want to give our user settime priv, either explicitly through rights or by making them power user or local admins. Anyway its a mute point - our "boss user" came back and said "to hell with them (the users), if they can't use the std clock/calendar then so be it. they probably got two or three real ones on their friggin desk anways" ... lol

So all that hard-work to build a little custom app was for naught - even got it running from the system tray ! (wah) ...

Ja, but you know you had fun building it.
'Tis a shame though nobody will appreciate it.

ja i did (have fun), its at the same dl point as before, here:

clock.zip

ok - i cheated a bit - plus implementing the real clock with the hands and the second hand is *way* too much work. By the way, the calendar control and even that funky custom LED display is on the KF todo list :0) ...
