Ok Guys 'n' Gals,
I've finished my first kick start script and now would like to assign it to the OU. I currently have *.bat file as my login script and stored those in the group policy. However, when I try the same method with *.kix the file is opening instead of running. Can someone please guide me on what next to do.
thanks

You need to read the manual that came with the kix download. In particular the section entitled 'Running KiXtart'...

Basically, the manual will not tell you how to run KiX from a GPO. It will however, give some advice on calling KiX from a BAT file. The trick is in deciding where you are going to put the KiX executables and scripts and then calling it in such a way that you do not have a dependency on a particular DC.

i understand all of that. I can safely test the script from my computer, but now i wish to put it on the domain controller. I already placed the script as well as the kix32.exe in the netLogon share. But it is not executing as the batch file is. So here is where I am requesting the assistance.

Do you want a MACHINE GPO Logon Script or a USER GPO Logon Script?

Have not tried but there are a few ways I would guess. You may be able to run WKIX32.EXE MYLOGON.KIX

OR

Run a batch file that calls KiX

OR

Associate .KIX files to WKIX32.EXE located on %NETLOGON%

I have not tired any of these methods, but would guess that one of them should work. I know the batch file method does as I did try that one about 2 years ago and it worked.

Not sure if Les runs any as a GPO or not, but he has been running around the Globe installing AD sites for his Company so he may have some experience in this area to share.

Since you store KiX32.exe and the script in \NetLogon, you will have to call it explicitly from there with your BATch file from the GPO Scripts folder. On my OU,I have a GPO logon script as follows:
\\MyCompany.com\SYSVOL\MyCompany.com\Policies\{8F913AA1-8559-40E6-893C-776A5EF68637}\User\Scripts\Logon\Logon.bat

Within your logon.bat, you will have to do something like:
\\MyCompany.com\Netlogon\KiX32.exe \\MyCompany.com\Netlogon\MyScript.kix

So Les, have you (or anyone else) confirmed that WKIX32.EXE MYLOGON.KIX does not work alone as a GPO?

For user logons though I like the idea of assigning it in the users profile. That way I can easily modify users or groups of users to use any script I want.

DOC,
Why not just cobble together a quick test and answer your own Q? You have the infrastructure.

90% of our company uses legacy logon scripts (defined in the user's profile) and only two divisions that I know of (mine is one) uses only GPO scripts. There may possibly be some that use a combination, but I don't keep stats.

Guess that depends on your interpretaion of "easy". Modifying groups of users gets a bit tricky since you cannot do group actions in the GUI and must resort to some admin scripting.

I'm out for a few days so could not test Les. But Admin scripting is what I meant by easy.

a batch file produces a console that NT can not avoid as far as I can tell. Our logon script is completely silent now so a blank console for a while would be a real anoyance.

GPO logon.bat does not show any console. The OS hides it. YOu should know that knowing how much I abhor the console.

Even on NT 4.0 clients? What about Win9x?

Reality check time...

GPOs do not work on legacy clients, period.
