If I close any Kixtart script by clicking on the "X", Kixtart will cause a restart (not reboot) of the PC. This seems to happen on any of the three PC's tested (3 IT people).

Using Kixtart 4.22, any ideas?

This is done by design to stop users trying to abort the script. Type BREAK ON at the begining of your script and you will be able to exit without the PC logging you off.

restart?
now you are lying, it only causes logoff.

if you want it to be interruptable, use the suggested "break on"
if you want the script to go on (like logonscripts normally must finish), use wkix32.exe as it just disables the X

Bit rough there? I was mistaken, it did a logoff, not a restart (though I did say it did not reboot). You both are correct there, it was the "Break On" issue, which I have added and it now works great.

I have looked at the manual for the main diffrences between "wkix32.exe" and "kix32.exe" but don't have a clear cut answers. From what I have figured out:

WKix32 is the "windows version" or "Console-less"
Wkix32 disables the "X" (from post previous to this)
It runs asynchronous which means it will not pause for you and you must use "start" commands to make sure it pauses.

I am currently using just "Kix32.exe" and it seems to be working fine for me. Is there any reason to use the "WKix32" version?

Basically as I view it the WKIX32.EXE is good for running logon scripts where you don't want the user to see the script being run. You can still show the user Messagebox or run other things if you need the user to see, otherwise you can run something like

WKIX32.EXE LOGON.KIX

Without running a batch file (NT/2000/XP/2003) ONLY! Windows 9x must run a batch file.

As an example I now run a lot of WMI scripting in my logon script which can take anywhere from 5 seconds to 5 minutes depending on the clients cpu speed and disk i/o speed.
However no one sees or knows the script is running and they can continue to run other applications while my script is still running.
If I were using KIX32.EXE the user would be seeing that logon box the entire time.

it has been my experience that you don't "have" to run a batch file for win9x. Simple call your logon script "kixtart.kix" and run "kix32.exe" for the logon script. The kix executable, will find and run kixtart.kix all on it's own. You could even go so far as to rename kix32.exe (or wkix32.exe) to logon.exe if you wanted to....

Yeah, suppose that is true Bryce.

I just never did like that approach myself so have not recommended it.

Not so fast! Wintendos have to be held back by Start /Wait for WKiX or they error out.

ok, i don't run wkix32, and was making an assumption.

what type of error do you get? I am guessing it is some how related to the z: going poof once wkix32 starts?
