I,m trying to get home directory's stored on Linux server to map to a drive on the Win98 client but I get a problem in that the mapping fails because it says the password is incorrect.
i am using

USE Y: "\\NET-INTER-NET\HOMES"
? "ERROR @ERROR: @SERROR" "after use Y "

and it tells me that the password is incorrect.

I think that Win98 is not passing the password to the Linux server in the environment, and that I need the KIXRPC service to be running on the client.
Is this correct.

I have tried installing the RPC service KXRPC -INSTALL with the dll;s all copied over to the client but the install fails with an NETAPI32.DLL error.

Am I missing something else

Hi Garry,

Did you try to connect these SAMBA shares without the use of KIX?

I'm asking this because I also had some problems connecting shares. My problem was that Win98 send it's passwords encrypted (the same as NT4 / W2K does). So I had to change something on the Linux server.

Have you got your Samba server authenticating your users to a domain controller. here is an example for the smb.conf

code:
security = SERVER
encrypt passwords = Yes
password server = Server1

I think this is what you want but this requires that you have a windows domain controller.

I think you have to set SECURITY=DOMAIN instead of server, at least for Samba 2.2+

I am aware of the encrypted password issue with win9x, and I have already applied the registry hack to fix that. I can access the share using the net use y: \\net-inter-net\homes at the DOS prompt, however it does prompt me for the password. That is why I think I need the RPC service running on Win9x.

The version of samba I am running is 1.9.x, which doesnt support the DOMAIN model.

Any advice on how to pursue the RPC service problem....Will this give me a cure if I get it to run
