If you write to the Policies area with a remote admin script then you are basically using a poor-man's GPO. Not going to say it cannot or should not be done throught KiX, but if GPOs are available to use through Active Directory, then that is the route I would go.

I would limit to KiX, only that which cannot be done by GPO.

I don't have the option of GPO yet. We are still running NT4 But I was still wondering if it was possible to refresh the environment on a remote machine? I found that, as Jens said, if I don't refresh the environment on the remote machine, the reg change won't stick.

Write a client-side script and run it as part of the login script.

If your users do not have admin privleges they will not be able to create at login these registry changes. I just tried it with a VBscript at login and it did not work.

That is why I am looking into KiXtart now.

Would you mind elaborating what registry changes you are talking about?

My guess would be he is talking about this key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop

Normal users do not have permissions to write to this key because it is a policy key that typically is set by the Server, not the user.

That's my guess as well, however he doesn't specifically reference the policies subkeys.

Yes its the Policies key.
Earlier in this thread it was mentioned and I just wanted to point out my experience with it.
