Does anyone know an easy way to access a users start menu on NT with roaming profiles using a kixstart. I need to determine whether an icon exists for a user and if not create it. The problem I am having is that NT roaming profiles sometime create, not as just the username, but in the format of username.000 and this throws off my script. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

well. first of all, username.000 or username.machine_name says that there is some problem on netprofile usage. maybe corrupted file or network is unavailable.

anyway checking for existenze is not neccessasy. just overwrite it on every logon!
if you don't want to use kix's inbuilt addprogramitem()-function use "%userprofile%\start menu\programs" as the path to copy your selfmade shortcut-file which can reside at netlogon-share (@ldrive).

Vetts,

username.000 is very common on Windows NT. It just means that the username was created, used, then deleted from SAM and recreated again ... When you delete than re-create a username, the Security Identifier changes and Windows NT senses this when you log in ... since the SID is different from the old one - NT creates a new profile and appends a sequence number like username.000

This is why you should never reference a user profile like this:

c:\winnt\profiles\@userid\desktop

always use this (on WinNT) :

%userprofile%\desktop

guaranteed to work every time. Over here - we delete, than recreate the user's desktop all the time. We have icons located on server shares and copy them down based on group membership ... works a charm ...

[plus - I would imagine that if you logged in with two identical usernames from two different domains - that would cause a username.000 profile as well ?]

On that same topic, does anyone know where I can get a list of the %var% variables used by Windows NT?

Vetts,

%vars% ? You should be able to get a list of those by typing this at the dos prompt:

c:\> set > vars.txt

Dear,

Welcome to the board.

The actual start menu can also be extracted from your registry.
To prevent users have unwanted icons we collect those information
by doing some DIR commands and with an additional program (for performance
reasons) we create a new kixtart script to complete start menu and
desktop.
greetings.

MCA,

Could you post the code you mentioned in the foregoing reply? I'm interested.

Martijn
