I'm not saying to just say no to MS, but this site does have some cool links to alternative software in multiple categories.

The message delivered by sites like these would be so much more powerful if they would cut down on the anti-MS rhetoric.

true.. but the anti-M$ rhetoric doesn't change the value of the products.

a Win98 install with OpenOffice, Spybot, Zone Alarm, AVG Antivirus, Google Toolbar, JustZipIt, Eudora or Netscape (but I hate Netscape) or Opera would be a formidible machine and completely free (except for the Win98). Anything else on the machine is gravy

machine with openoffice?
dude, you would then need to double the cpu speed to make it even close as fast as office.

nah, linux box with kde comes with office, devel tools, firewall, browser, various mail softs, various servers...
just choose in the installation package options it to have samba 3 and apache and you got a full range of machine which fights all ms products.

oh, some did not know, samba 3 runs fine with ad.

Lonk,

Speaking of LINUX.. Have you had much experience with Xandros? It is about $90 USD, but has CodeWeaver built-in and can run many Microsoft products, including Outlook and Exchange connectors too..

I think the big thing is WINE and Codeweaver focuses on the M$-Office implementation of it..

I wasn't thinking so much of in the work environment, but more in the home user environment.

OpenOffice is fast enough, and the native file format is 'hidden' from most macro viruses. And if the email client isn't Outlook (express) the virii it does catch isn't as likely to spread

Kent,

You can read more about WINE over at Lindows. According to the CEO of Lindows they supported WINE but feel that the whole purpose of using open source is to get away from Microsoft. So they redirected there money back into better Linux applications rather then supporting running Windows applications on Linux.

If you're going to run Microsoft Office then you might as well run 2000 or XP as well.

Doc,

I was more interested in the product: CrossOver Office - http://www.codeweavers.com/site/products/ it is about $50 USD vs. $90 USD for Xandros.

All of this is based on WINE and has been slow to develop until the past couple of years..
