I ran a couple of searches and didn't turn up anything here, but maybe I missed something. In any case, I wondered if anyone knows of a way to add sites to the IE trusted zone list, such as http://*.kixtart.org and so forth. In particular, I need to add a few SSL sites to the list for all our employees. I tried to find a GPO/policy template for this but didn't see any that looked like they do this. If it's a registry change, Kix should be able to do it easily at login I would think.

See for example http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/security/szone/overview/esc_development.asp or use a registry monitor tool as described in the FAQ Forum to find the changed registry keys before/after adding a site to a security zone.

Why not just use GPOs as they were intended?

Two weeks ago I had the same question. I used a tool called ART (Advanced registry tracer). It works very easy. Scan the registry. Add a trusted site and again scan the registry. Compare both scans. The difference is the regkey you have to modify.

CO,

You talk about ART.. Have you been over to the FAQ Section and looked at -
Registry Tools

More specifically - Regshot

?

I went out and looked at ART - http://www.elcomsoft.com/art.html , and it is not free (USD $40).

I think RegSnap, listed above, should serve the same purpose.

Thanks everyone! (Les) I looked in the Policy templates collections but only found security zone settings, nothing for adding servers or addresses into them, but maybe I wasn't looking in the right place? I was starting to think that IEAK was the only alternative to logon scripts and registry mods, but this thread has given me some great ideas to try out.

only found security zone settings

Then you were very close...

Expand - User Configuration \Windows Settings \Internet Explorer Maintenance \Security

Under Security Zones and Content Ratings, Import the current security zones settings and click Modify Settings. Click on Trusted Sites, click Sites... \Advanced... and enter the URLs.

I don't think wildcards are supported as per your example in your first post.

Les,

Per Microsoft Documentation
Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration

Quote:

You can use wildcards to add all subdomains for a given domain. For example, you can add *.microsoft.com to the list, which adds both www.microsoft.com and support.microsoft.com.

Here is a non-Microsoft site that discusses Trusted Sites as well.
