I am running my script to map drives to servers and a storage device which house all my home folders and users share directory.

Here is what my mapping looks like;

;**** HOME FOLDERS FOR USERS ****
USE F: /DEL
USE F: \\OIL\HOME\USERS

;**** SHARED FOLDER FOR USERS ****
USE H: /DEL
USE H: \\OIL\HOME\SHARED

;**** APPLICATION SERVER ****
USE I: /DEL
USE I: \\GAS\APPS

;**** UNIX SHARE FOR GEOLOGY DEPT ****
USE J: /DEL
USE J: \\OIL\UNIX2\

Note: The maps looks ok at the W2K pc's but W9x pc's show everything in the share on the storage device.
What i'm trying to achieve here is a login that will allow each user to see only their Home folder and Share directory. Most of my users are running Win98 a small portion are running Win2000. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
JAMMER

Hi Jammer,

Please export this Registry key from your OIL server and post it here (at least some of it)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\lanmanserver\Shares

Make sure you point the users home folder in User Manager to their share i.e.

MYUSER1 = \\OIL\HOME\SHARED\myuser1$

Then share out \\OIL\HOME\SHARED\MYUSER1 as myuser1$

Give this a try and let us know.

Hi NTDOC,

I was unabled to attached the registry key because this is a Net Appliance server external storage. however, I did as you suggested and created the share. that did not work, Do I need to use Shell and or Setl command to map the various workstations OS's?
Thanks,
Jammer

Hello Jammer,

I'm sorry, I thought you were talking about an NTFS Windows NT/2000 volume. In your case for using a Network Appliance Storage solution it does not suppor the Windows NT/2000 security.
All security and sharing is typically done by its own sharing much like a Windows 9x shares the directory with its given
permissions, but can not secure the files like NTFS can.

Please read the manual for advise on setting up the Shares.
You need to pay special attention to how the shares are setup so that you do not expose the entire volume to a security risk by
accidentally allowing someone to get Full access from another share that can get to other directories.

Windows 2000 allows MAP ROOT to any folder level, Windows 9x does not.
That is why they see the main Share level and everything below. Definetely not a secure approach, but many companies appear to be using these devices because of
the cheap cost. As I said, please review the manual to setup the shares properly.

Sorry I can't really be much more help on this for you.
