Dear,
Each five years we see new names on the horizon. It starts with the computer department. Commercial organizations were introducing all kind of new names i.e. IT, ICT, helpdesk, system administrator department and support department. In comparison with the past not all software must be created now. General software is available and i.e. MS becomes big with those software. General software becomes with the years also very expensive for supporting. Company software becomes more stable and gets more functionalities. A big influence in our opinion on new technologies and new general software has the internet world. Most Word documents aren't using all new functionalities of recent Word releases. Internet requires an upgrade to make it possible to see your information in a proper way. greetings.

(In the UK) IT came first and made sense because the services were "technology" oriented - supplying and maintaining the hardware was the core job, even software development was seen as supporting the hardware.
In the 80's there was a huge shift where departments wanted to change how they were perceived and broaden the support and services they provided beyond the core hardware.
So, "IT" became viewed as old and sedentary, while "IS" was new, active and forward-looking.
It was a marketeers wet dream, so IT departments up and down the country got their name changed for no good reason other than the board wanted to be seen as being hip and with it (horrible, like your dad dancing at the school disco)
So, IT->Hardware, IS->Value Added Services. Your internal department is more IT, an out-sourcing company is more IS.
Nowadays most people don't know the difference so the terms have become interchangeable.

We are IS, but our corporate Gurus are IT&S. They've got all their bases covered.
Personally, I like IT better. Just makes more sense. But in a Hospital, IT stands for Intensive Treatment, so we had to take the next best thing.

It is funny to read MCA's response. How do we answer the phone with respect to the caller? For example, we would say to a "customer" - "This is Kent from the Support Desk." But, this really doesn't fit anymore as we outsource the Support Desk. Or, if you were to call on say a vendor - "This is Kent from CompanyXX IT."
But, anyway to my point.. Take my Job Title - I started in December 1999 at my current Job.. I was a "Systems Analyst II" and then I became a "DBA" (Talk about going to the "Dark Side" ) a "Network Engineer" and now I am "Systems Engineer." The thing that is funny is that I still do pretty much the same job, just the titles have switched around.
Our company itself has switched the title back and forth to fit the most politically correct thing at the time. One of the things that has been the most radical is the naming of our servers - Our current Director has mandated that all servers be named after Greek Gods like Apollo, etc. We used to use a more logical approach: Location-OS-Function as an example: SANNTSE01 and would read SAN for San Fransico, NT for Windows NT, S for Server, E for Exchange, and 01 for the first server. Instead the word APOLLO could mean it is in Jacksonville, Portland, Walnut Creek or wherever. I guess this could be topic unto it's own. We have tried to explain that to him, but he would not hear of it.

In my short career I have thus far worked in IS, IT, TSG (Technical Services Group) and IS&T - all without changing jobs!
The department name change has also never been reflected in my job title, which is simply "Corporate IT Support". I did ask for "Senior Idiot", but was told that the best I could hope for was "Assistant to the Senior Idiot".
[Sigh...]
Kent, as for naming schemes (servers, printers, whatever) you're opening a huge can of worms. Whilst I appreciate the logic of a server named (for example) CORPDRDC01 (our first Corporate division domain controller at the DR site) - I personally would much rather have a "friendly" naming scheme. So we have a compromise - the names get friendlier if users will need to reference the servers directly. Hence, CORPPRINT01, CORPDATA01 and others. I did try to hold out for a Lord of the Rings theme, thinking GANDALF was a great name for a PDC, but the support wasn't there...!
Printers are a different matter, though. I firmly believe that printers should have good friendly names, to help the users refer to them. I'm based in London in the UK, and at my last company, our printers were named after stations on the London Underground. This worked really well, as each dept could be assigned a line, and we never ran out of stations. It means more to a user if his printer has a big sticker on it saying "Baker Street", or "Leicester Square", when compared to another printer naming scheme I've come across (print server-location-printer ID) - horrible names like LONPRT04-OMP4th-02 - not too memorable.
Just my £0.02.

Of course there are some of us that deal with Information Security, which is sometimes referred to as IS as well.
