Oh, you've got me. Not only am I from Boston, I also happen to work right smack in the middle of town with free view onto the Green Monster. Unfortunately, we can't look into the stadium itself, that Monster is just plain big.

BTW, I slowed down considerably with the RTFM phrase itself. However, I will continue to point poeple to the KiXtart Manual. The manual should always be the first point of reference.

And if you would look at my footer, then you'd see that I try to provide numerous online KiXtart resources.

The questionis rather why people don't bother doing their own hoemwork before asking for help? Most of the info and answers are readily available and it would most likely take less time to just look it up in the KiXtart Manual or this BBs compared to posting the question. And if somebody asks "How do I install KiXtart?" then why should I not point him to the manual or the FAQ Forum?

Well, I must confess that I have an even lower tolerance for mediocrity than Jens has. I have difficulty with some of the ineptitude I see here and often have to sit on my hands to avoid saying what is on my mind.

This is not kindergarten but rather a board for sysadmins. We do not offer a babysitting service.

If you are an inept sysadmin, you had better learn quickly to make good use of the tools and learn how to communicate effectively or think of a career change.

I am getting tired of hearing cry-babies pissing and moaning and running to momma.

Sounds like the only one taking the criticsm well is JENS himself!! I appreciate that...and I think JENS understands and has already gotten what he needs out of this post...which is what the board is for.

The rest of this is just blabbing about what most of us know is true.

I think it is still funny how you managed to pick out Jens, out of this crowd of irrascable admins and programmers we have for Moderators here.

Jens, Shawn, and Kent are the politest and most courteous of the bunch of us... leaving Myself and Les and possibly Lonk (only if he runs out of Vodka) as the most ... 'abrasive' of us.

Les is a great guy, just don't confuse him with a frenchie... I will not be held responsible if that happens

Don't forget about Doc and Cappy - they go out of their way to be nice too. I don't mind answering the same questions over and over. Its an easy way to bump your post-count and maybe even get a rating star [Wink]

About this subject I think that not answering will make the newbie to RTFM anyway cause there is no choice left.

ja, if I see a stupid question or post I just don't bother replying ... at least Jens and Les and Rad and others make an effort to answer, even if its to RTFM which is a valid reply because usually the answer is in the FM ...

Tell you one thing that does bother me though (since we're airing dirty laundry here) is people that do get answers - darn good answers - yet don't even take the time to reply or dismiss or to even to say thanks for helping ... that bugs me but like everything, comes with the territory I guess ... different strokes.

I understand the reason for the post and that the 'tone' of some of Jens' replies to these inane questions may be a bit harsh, but they brought it on themselves.

Obviously even if the person has a limited knowledge of Kix itself they obviouslyy have at least a basic knowledge of the Internet and were successful in finding this great site. They even went to the effort of registering and posting.

The flaw in most of the analogies listed is that this site is not a 'situation', this site is a community and most of the collective knowledge is documented and archived in a searchable form.

Just my .02

The danger there is some noobie WILL answer with misinformation and others will suffer for it if they later come upon the thread and take it as gospel. An excellent example is the Topic: how to use the if exist command where Howard gave a very good example of the EXIST function and then another noob came along and hijaaked the thread with the silly "does not seem to work" comment. Waddup wi dat?

Was the noob looking for a solution or simply critiquing? What followed was a string comedic replies.

Think the keyword we're missing here is "politeness" ... some organizations have to be polite - thinking of restaurants, airlines, hotels and the like ... even if the customer is an arrogant a**hole, the front-line folk and their management usually bite their tongues and bow to the customers demands ...

Thats not to say that KORG is like a restaurant or hotel but we do have a reputation to maintain ... regardless of what business we're in and I think that is what is truely important. Since KORG is the center of the Kixtart universe (as far as i'm concerned) it should also set the standard for friendlyness and helpfullness - after all, there are other Kixtart boards that customers can go to. They might not have the same personality as this board does but help is offered. In fact, most of the regulars here frequent those other boards ...

Anyways back to my point, guess what I am saying is - is that there are ways to say RTFM without saying RTFM! ... one can suggest to RTFM in a polite and helpfull way ... think DOC may be the best at doing that.

Yes DOC is best at that and so is Radimus despite his above comments. So was DrillSergeant. [Smile]

Oops - forgot Howard who also seems forever polite. [Big Grin]

I couldn't find it, but did find:

adj.
Prone to outbursts of temper; easily angered.
Characterized by or resulting from anger.

I would prefer to describe my character flaw as simply an intolerance of mediocrity and readily admit that it is an impediment to career advancement. If ever I was put in a supervisory position, I would likely fire too many people if they didn't quit on me first.

Shawn, quit pissing and moaning and running to momma. [Big Grin]

My last promotion was to a minor supervisory position (of 2 junior system analysts). I thought, "cool, job growth and fodder for my resume". Then the MGMT went and redefined my position to something like, "lock him in his office and feed him projects through the slot in the door. AND by no means, ask him a question pertaining to policy or staff or management."

The Last question I recieved from my supervisor was, "How can we modify the logon script to block internet access to a specific group of users" and he emailed me a link to the setProxy UDF I posted here.

I told him that we can't do it and to get with the lazy dumbass network managers and make a deny rule on the proxy server.
