Dear,
We agree with Shawn's way of working. We don't mind answeringthe same questions over and over. Also it isn't important people are asking things, which everybody can read in the manual. Indeed "kixtart.org" should also set the standard for friendlyness and helpfullness by helping people.
No newbies can download kixtart without the original documentation. So, in our opinion nobody can run a kixtart script without any knowledge of it. Everybody need to read something before they can start at all with kixtart.
RTFM aren't words we are using at all in our posts. It isn't necessary. Just, when information isn't complete you can ask them. Asking additional information has an educational effect for everyone. Next time most of the required information will be there from the beginners.
Possible, that the major issue of mmletzko is that newbies can be gone when they get a reaction they don't expect. Not for every sysadmin or other experience user it is very clear what kind of information is necessary for a good answer. Possible they don't know at that time what the real problem is. Possible their question contains enough information to start an answer and other can always ask for additional information.
So, always we must be friendly and helpfull for newbies. Also, we shouldn't forget that everybody has his own way of express himself. Just read between the lines. greetings. [ 07. November 2003, 12:07: Message edited by: MCA ]

I agree and I disagree..
I agree we should be friendly and work with people to get them going in the world of KiXtart. I disagree on the note where somebody expects us to write code for them.
Sheesh, we are in the world of IT.. If you cannot stand the heat, criticism, being yelled at, being thick-skinned you are in the wrong profession. Yes, I know we are human, but you also have to think about this in the world we work in too.
We, are "scripters." What generally happens when somebody doesn't get a drive map or icon doesn't show on the desktop? They come to you and me. The first "gutteral" response is the logon script and come to find out somebody tweaked with AD. Most everybody else in IT would not dare touch a login script, but we were given it usually not by choice, but in my personal example, I welcomed it.

Stock answers I can agree with. This was to be the tact we tried with the FAQ and the BKM (Best Known Methods). There is a BKM FAQ..
Actually, it is called best practices..

Sorry Jack..
I know what you are trying to say.. But, before thist came about, I created the BKM FAQ Topic. I know we should not provide a ton of links or merely say RTFM. It was an attempt to put together a set of items that we use daily when writing scripts. My point being, is that it could be a resource or repository for us to use. Another way would be for somebody like DOC to put together a Help File we could copy/paste from. The real concern here is consistency. This way, we all have consistent answers. The other thing is that yes, we can copy/paste an answer to the poster, but we should also have a repository too - that is why the FAQ Section was born. If we think about this in the Microsoft sense, they have http://support.microsoft.com and if we have a question, we go there or to http://msdn.microsoft.com . I know we have to show them to the door too.

let us also remember this:
Our target audience, is other IT staff. I have had to RTFM for more than 10 years. scripting is not a 'secret', nor is it a magic bullet.
When you come here with a problem, it is in response to a problem... usually it is because DOS sucks and your logon folder has about 30 little DOS apps.
If you can't figure out the FM, there is no way you are going to be clever enought to do anything but the most basic of scripts, and what you really need is someone else to go your job so you can go back to removing jammed paper from printers.
The starters forum should be for somone who doesn't understand the syntax of a command, or difficulty in getting the RPC service running, or a problem in determining HOW to go about doing something... not for someone that doesn't know how to map a home folder
The Scripts forum should be for assisting people with logic errors in their code. not for people to request a script for their problem.
I'm not saying that I am unhelpful, I have been and wish to continue to be helpful to people, but I expect people when they have a problem to have gone through at least the basics of resolving it themselves.. and in many cases, you have to pry the problem out of them to get enough info to begin helping them.
This isn't an Us vs Them, it is a WE and I expect a more from MY community

And in an effort to be more helpful, how about a few of our more international members do some volunteer work on translating the kix manual into their non-english language.
I keep http://www.scriptlogic.com/kixtart/htmlhelp/default.asp on my linkbar and use it all the time. Perhaps DOC and/or Lonk wouldn't mind hosting a similar site for a multi-language version.
German, Spanish, Danish, Swedish, and French. Any others??
BTW, is there a big difference in Castiano vs. 'Mexican', 'Portugese', 'Colombian', etc?
What do you guys think??? I can't help as I and too ignorant to do anything but offer more work for you guys to do. [ 07. November 2003, 17:10: Message edited by: Radimus ]
