woops - ok - did you actually break-out the udf and wrap stats arounf the dimming and assigning of $vars, and find that they take a (relatively) big chunk of time ?

By the way guys ... the UDF is working wonderfully and its really fast - in fact, you can't even tell its there which for this script, means a whole bunch. Thanks again for the great diversion.

Actually, I removed statements like Dim which saved time. Then I simply used variables from the function definition like $c and $. Even though the data returned was wrong (expected), the function ran much faster when new vars were not introduced.
