Do you need to handle versions P4 to P6 of this format? Your test examples only cover P1->P3 but the write up talks about the P4->P6 formats.

At least one of Jens' test files does contain extra white space (feep.ppm). The extra spaces are systematical placed but they are there.

I found another reference for the PxM file formats at http://www.daubnet.com/formats/PBM.html

According to that reference the term WHITESPACE encompasses one or more characters from the following set: TAB, LF, CR, SPACE (= ASCII codes: 8, 10, 13, 32).

I have tested this with JASC's Paint Shop Pro 7 and a modified CIRCLE_ASCII.PBM that contains various whitespaces and comment lines in random places of the file. The program did read this modified file correctly and displayed a correct image.

The RAW file formats P4-P6 will not be used, the challenge is limited to the ASCII formats P1-P3.

Nope, however, I do have the concept for an alternate image display and could whip something up to demonstrate it. It might not be optimized though.

I know kixtart did not directly support binary but I thought maybe Jens wanted us to try to convert the binary to decimal inside the UDF. The write up seemed to imply this but now I know better.

Another question, I think Jooel might have raised this issue, it concerns error checking.

You state:

5) Illegal character encountered

Do you wish an extensive error checking UDF or can we just forget error checking?

I think we should forget the error checking since the Pxmagic.kix script does not check for return values or errors.

Okay, official call: You can forgo the error checking.

However, your solution still must pass all provided images and adhere to the PxM formats. Thus, if I decide to test with other valid PxM files, the routines must be able to accept these, too.
