It might seem silly from the outside, but from what I understand, it helps "cement" a couple's relationship. There was an article in a local paper, where the couple were just a couple of weeks from their 69th Wedding Anniversary, were square dancers, and were high school sweethearts, but both had passed away within four days of each other.
