Thought you guys might be able to shed some light on this problem, or maybe provide some leads ...

We are currently deploying MS Jet SP7 to all our NT4 wkstns via Tivoli, which basically installs this stuff running as a service type thing on the wkstn, in the background ...

For some strange reason, out of about 70 wkstns in a single distribution, MS Jet will not install on one of them sqwaking something about Insufficient Disk space on the wkstn, even though its actually not that big of a package, plus there are about 3-4GB of free space there.

Don`t have alot of extra detail right now, other than to ask if anyone has seen this strange intermittent behavior in the past, and wondering if there is an INF setting that might stop the disk space check from happening. Or better yet, propose a theory as to why some wkstns have this problem. Could it be something to do with just %TEMP% space, i dont know ...

Are you deploying the right version to NT4 clients? [Razz]

quote:
There are five versions of the Jet 4.0 SP7 download. The first download is only for computers that are running Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0. The second download is only for computers that are running Windows 2000. The third download is only for computers that are running Windows Millennium Edition. The fourth download is only for computers that are running Windows XP. The fifth download is only for computers that are running Windows Server 2003. Each download contains updated versions of several .dll files that are included with Access 2002, Microsoft Office XP Developer, Microsoft Visual Basic version 6.0 or later, and other Microsoft products that incorporate Jet database engine 4.0.

The other thing to bear in mind, based on current stats, this problem only happens on less than 1% of the workstations (1 out of 70) ... all our wkstns are pretty much identical in terms of OS and APPS (you know what I mean, thats in theory) ... so can't explain this anomoly, for some reason, the install gets an incorrect picture of free disk space ...

I don't know how they do math up there in Toronto, but 1 out of 70 is decidedly more (not less) than 1% here in Dayton. 1.4%, in fact.

Basta!

Other than that, I have nothing meaningful to add here. [Wink] [Razz]

I have found that with some installers (older ones mostly) that the real problem is too much free disk space (over 2 gig). If it fails a manual install, temporarily increase the size of the page file to reduce the amount of free space. If that does it, find yourself a stick and go beat on someone with it. [Big Grin]

I agree with Les, in fact I think NAV has a KB about something like that where the install fails because it "thinks" there is not enough even though there is.

Also the installer from WiseSolutions has a KB on this.

None of them list real fixes that I remember. Just appears to be a fluke that some systems return.. ie (buggy installer tool) [Wink]

Les, Doc, this is good info to go on ... if this happened on just one machine, would have dismissed it and just re-imaged the machine, but it has happened on two, maybe three, so can't dismiss it that easily ... we've got about 10,000 of these things to do in the next few week and want to investigate fully ...

This notion that the install is getting faked into thinking there is not enough disk space sounds like a good lead ... this will be my first plan of attack in the morning. Would like to find these KB articles you are referring to, if you run across them before I do, let me know.

One doc from Symantec
Not enough disk space error message during installation of Norton AntiVirus

Could not find the one from Wise Solutions

It might also be possible that either the FAT or MFT is reporting the free disk space incorrectly due to a corrupted block or bad index file.

Thanks for that. Good idea about the reporting thingy, in fact - going to whip up a quick kix script tomorrow that reports on free disk space and have the guy at the remote site run it on the wkstn ...

By the way, that IE Version script of yours - you sure you got ALL the permutations in there ? I just tried running your script on my Compaq Pocket PC to see if it would detect my Pocket Internet Explorer ... got this weird system error, whats up with that ?

Try KiXtart v2.33 or v3.63 instead.

ja, jlo suggested same on msn and we got the exact same error on 2.32 ... funny thing is, pocket pc doesn't even come with a native command window so would be an interesting excerise running any scripting language on Windows CE.
